Historia
Fight is the backstage story of bloodsport politics in its rawest form—the clawing, backstabbing, and rabble-rousing that drove Donald Trump into the White House and Democrats into the wilderness. At every turn, the combatants went for the jugular, whether they were facing down rivals in the other party or their own.

Disappointing 20-20 Hindsight
Revisado: 04-26-25
Definitely some good reporting and detail here - but the account fundamentally lacks nuance and takes the typical journalistic MMQB route - of course the outcome was so obvious, etc.
This telling shows no respect for the mysteries associated with persuading voters, and the incredible closeness of all 3 Trump elections. It almost lapses into “Trump won a mandate” territory.
When elections are this close - blame needs to be be apportioned much more carefully and artfully.

Historia
To trace the history of the twenty-first century so far is to trace a history of unaffordability and shortage. After years of refusing to build sufficient housing, America has a national housing crisis. After years of limiting immigration, we don’t have enough workers. Despite decades of being warned about the consequences of climate change, we haven’t built anything close to the clean-energy infrastructure we need. Ambitious public projects are finished late and over budget—if they are ever finished at all.

Big Picture Thinking is Not What We Need
Revisado: 04-20-25
To thought leaders/pundits/Substack authors - the 30,000 foot view and related generalizations are not helpful and do no lead to change. Execution - as noted in this book - is paramount. And execution is specific to each community/government/kind of challenge.
These ideas are mildly interesting - though already expressed and in the discourse for the most part - but they are not productive. Bottom line - except for the benefit of the authors and the opportunity to do podcasts, this book simply did not need to be written. Change comes with the specifics and implementation, not vague notions.

In the bestselling The Signal and the Noise, Nate Silver showed how forecasting would define the age of Big Data. Now, in this timely and riveting new book, Silver investigates "The River," or those whose mastery of risk allows them to shape—and dominate—so much of modern life. These professional risk takers—poker players and hedge fund managers, crypto true-believers and blue-chip art collectors—can teach us much about navigating the uncertainty of the 21st century.

Indispensable Perspective
Revisado: 09-03-24
This is a very enlightening book. It provides really interesting analysis of probabilistic thinking and a bunch of other related concepts. I think you need to know these things to understand our world today. And this is unique insight in general - in my mind, that is why Silver is so valuable - he truly attempts to understand things as they are, which is no small goal in a society where everyone has an axe to grind.
The “but” is about probabilistic thinking in general - it’s odd that those who are so focused on data - not referring to Silver himself so much as other characters he talks about - are willing to make “probabilistic” bets with very little data, setting odds that are at times of varying levels of ridiculousness (P(doom), come on, or the guy talking about a 90% vs a 93% chance, while making up the numbers in his head.)
This is why EV calculations are often absurd - it’s just silly to talk about an outcome with a 1% chance of a great success (assuming you even know that) and calculate its EV on that basis, This is not reality, and EV extremism is why we have SBF and other bizarre players in this strange universe.
However, it is vital to understand these topics, and I truly appreciate the exercise of probabilistic thinking (can lead to good analysis and conversations). But like most Riverian takes, this book leaves out the reality of the less advantaged and what to do about it (though Silver makes some passing comments), and you are left with a really strange playground of wealthy misfits playing games (because there are enough of them) in an attempt to find meaning in their lives.
In the end - this is what I think living “On the Edge” is really about - just one collection of coping mechanisms for dealing with the challenges of life for those with access to capital. Unfortunately, they are using their skills and brainpower to focus on financial profit (not solely, I get it), but that’s how things work.

Historia
More than 40 years after it ended, the Vietnam War continues to haunt our country. We still argue over why we were there, whether we could have won, and who was right and wrong in their response to the conflict. When the war divided the country, it created deep political fault lines that continue to divide us today. Now, continuing in the tradition of their critically acclaimed collaborations, the authors draw on dozens and dozens of interviews in America and Vietnam to give us the perspectives of people involved at all levels of the war.

Historia
For almost three decades, Fox News has not only made political careers (see: President Donald J. Trump) but also fundamentally altered the political landscape of the United States. It is a truism: as Fox goes, so goes the nation—into further divisiveness and awash in fake news, a gleefully polarizing company. But just as Fox has pushed America apart, now it too is coming apart. As is the family dynasty behind it.

Historia
In 2020, while the COVID-19 pandemic raged, the US was hit by a ripple of political discontent the likes of which had not been seen since the 1960s. The spark was the viral video of the horrific police murder of an unarmed Black man. The killing of George Floyd galvanized a nation already reeling from COVID and a toxic political cycle. Tens of thousands poured into the streets to protest. The entire country suddenly seemed to be roaring for change in one voice. Then nothing much happened. Fredrik deBoer explores why these passionate movements failed and how they could succeed in the future.

Indispensable Reality Check
Revisado: 10-02-23
Anyone who wants to create meaningful change in public policy should read this book. It fairly critiques aspects of social justice movements without overdoing it. We should all be looking for the most effective and concrete strategies to address our challenges.
(The narrator is also excellent, noticeably skilled, one of the best of I have heard.)

Horrifying
Revisado: 08-10-23
A dismaying portrayal of an industry searching for the lowest common denominator, reveling in and living for absurd images and concepts (what color is the dress) and spending countless hours and billions of dollars merely to enable time wasting, but doing so as a professional objective.
One must ask what is wrong with intelligent people who would devote their lives to such meaningless endeavors or writing about them. Greed? Deficient character or values? It is hard to say.

Historia
For years, Walmart and Amazon operated in separate spheres—one a massive brick-and-mortar retailer, the other an online giant. But in 2016, Walmart aggressively moved into the world of e-commerce, while Amazon made big bets in physical retail. The resulting rivalry is a bare-knuckle power struggle as each titan tries to outmaneuver the other to become the biggest omnichannel retailer in the world. As the two megacorporations have consolidated power, troubling consequences have also emerged.

Very well done, great window into e-commerce and this particular rivalry. My takeaway on Wal Mart is that you can’t really do brick/mortar and online sales in a mutually beneficial way for both functions. Worth reading.

Andrea Elliott follows eight dramatic years in the life of Dasani, a girl whose imagination is as soaring as the skyscrapers near her Brooklyn shelter. In this sweeping narrative, Elliott weaves the story of Dasani’s childhood with the history of her ancestors, tracing their passage from slavery to the Great Migration north. As Dasani comes of age, New York City’s homeless crisis has exploded, deepening the chasm between rich and poor. She must guide her siblings through a world riddled by hunger, violence, racism, drug addiction, and the threat of foster care.

Historia
You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.
