Mediocre misogyny
Revisado: 08-11-23
These books really show their age. Women are treated as children. McGee is a 60s playboy, just doesn’t play well in the modern era. If you can get past that, the story is interesting.

Historia
For three crucial years in the 1930s, the Spanish Civil War dominated headlines in America and around the world as volunteers flooded to Spain to help its democratic government fight off a fascist uprising led by Francisco Franco and aided by Hitler and Mussolini. Today we're accustomed to remembering the war through Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls and Robert Capa's photographs. But Adam Hochschild has discovered some less familiar yet far more compelling characters who reveal the full tragedy and importance of the war.

Sad but essential
Revisado: 07-12-23
Many more Americans should become familiar with the Spanish Civil War and it’s importance as as a prelude to the wider battle against fascism. This book is an excellent way to get started.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: A performance so poignant, we gave Bronson Pinchot (yes, Balki from Perfect Strangers) our inaugural Narrator of the Year award.... In the monsoon season of 1968-69 at a fire support base called Matterhorn, located in the remote mountains of Vietnam, a young and ambitious Marine lieutenant wants to command a company to further his civilian political ambitions. But two people stand in his way.

Historia
Over two decades, Rick Perlstein has published three definitive works about the emerging dominance of conservatism in modern American politics. With the saga's final installment, he has delivered yet another stunning literary and historical achievement. In late 1976, Ronald Reagan was dismissed as a man without a political future: defeated in his nomination bid against a sitting president of his own party, blamed for President Gerald Ford's defeat, too old to make another run.

Least favorite of the trilogy
Revisado: 02-10-23
This is my last favorite of the author’s three books on the rise of conservatism in the US. Less analytical than the prior two, probably because the history is so recent. And far too long.

Weaker than book 1

KSR is a poetic stylist and a great plotter, but this book is just not as good as the first in the California trilogy. Also, I don’t care for Rudnicki as a narrator.

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Historia
This national best-seller vividly reconstructs one of the most unbelievable and controversial battles in American military history—General Custer’s Last Stand in 1876. Why would a seasoned leader like Custer lead 200 U.S. Army soldiers into battle against 2,000 Native American warriors? The answer lies in this book, which captures in stunning detail the heroism, foolishness, and brutality that led to this legendary battle.

Tremendous work of “creative nonfiction “ - although I dislike that term. Meandering at times, but never dull. Adrian Cronauer is the perfect voice for Connell’s prose.
