Historia
Their minds stolen. Uploaded into war-machines. They fight a secret war to preserve humanity. What if there was a war raging for one million years, but it was kept secret? It's a question Sargis never considered, born as an upper middle class man living in Prime City during a so-called "Millenia of Peace." As far as he, or anyone else knows, humanity has no army, no weapons, and no wars.

Not much of a book.

Joe is a hell of a Podcaster, but he's not much of a novelist. This book was written better by John Scalzi twenty years ago.

Historia
Zoey Ashe wakes up every day feeling like she’s trying to steer a battleship while tied to the propeller. The twenty-three-year-old heiress to a criminal empire is navigating a futuristic world of high-tech liars and cutthroats, forced to learn the rules of a devious game she never asked to play. Now she’s facing a crisis that is both bigger and stranger than all that came before: The gleaming new city of Tabula Ra$a is hosting its massive annual music festival, which every year precedes the equally massive annual drunken riot.

it's fun, but not great.
Revisado: 11-14-23
this is the seventh book I've read by Jason, and it's the first that I would have had a hard time offering a blank recommendation. Jason remains clever and creative enough to keep me coming back, but his tendency to overuse tropes and story structure is becoming more apparent. Like, how many times is he planning on using ticking time bomb? John 2 had the air strike countdown, John 4 used the rods from the gods, and now Zoey 3 has the election. The book is still a lot of fun, but going forward, I hope Jason starts to mix up the format a bit.

Historia
Jane McKeene was born two days before the dead began to walk the battlefields of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania - derailing the War Between the States and changing the nation forever. In this new America, safety for all depends on the work of a few, and laws like the Native and Negro Education Act require certain children attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead.

another entry in well worn YA territory.
Revisado: 09-12-22
Whether you're a candidate at the citadel, an attendant at the combat school, a tribute for the games, or a wizard at magic college, the plot beats are largely the same.
If you've got a strong attachment to the setting, or if this is your first YA novel, you'll probably enjoy it a lot, but if you're a regular reader, you've probably already read this book before.

Why is this book so hyped?
Revisado: 12-18-21
Unbelievably dull. Two-thirds of this novel reads like a wikipedia page dedicated to radio astronomy. The characters all flatter than a pancake, and never develop. Seriously, why both having more than one character if the only difference between them is their names?
Boring, poorly plotted, dense, unimaginative and inaccessible.

Historia
On a cold spring night in 1952, a huge meteorite fell to earth and obliterated much of the East Coast of the US, including Washington, DC. The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the Earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space and requires a much-larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Elma York’s drive to become the first lady astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her.

A strong start, but slows quickly.
Revisado: 05-26-20
the first three or so chapters are very compelling, but the plot really begins to slow down toward the second act. The whole novel could have used a few rewrites, for example there are fourteen chapters dealing with the protagonists anexity when two or three would have done fine, and there isn't legal requirement to end every chapter with a awkward sex scene.

you've read this far ... and heres another one.
Revisado: 11-12-19
I don't even know what keeps me coming back to these novels, they're all laughably similar, nothing really progresses or changing book to book except some military rank shuffling. I always laugh out of loud every time the characters just spill their guts out, pontificating out loud about their plans and motivations and then James McGill will opine "I was starting to understand."

a smirking hillbilly bumbles and bullshits his way through a couple of disjointed plot segments, beds a couple of one dimensional prop female characters, and then everyone's rank shifts.
BV Larson's writing is ... problematic at times. I wish he would give up on writing about sex because he isn't good at it. But there enough creative and humorous ideas here to keep me reading. So, I dont know. Mission accomplished?

A frantic build-up of forces has begun, but the task is hopeless. Seeking allies, Earth's legions are sent to Blood World. A planet on the fringe of known space, where the people only respect masters of combat. Earth's Legions must impress them, but other alien powers have been invited to join the contest. Revisado: 11-07-19
you always know what you're going to get with a BV Larson, a smirking hillbilly stumbling his way through a high falooting space adventure. I just wish the author could find a new way to introduce skulduggery into the series without Claver. He's tired, one-note, and preposterous. It's time to retire that character and mixed up the narrative a bit.
