When Jim, a young merchant seaman, joins a ship carrying Muslims to Mecca, he's flush with heroic daydreams. But after only a few days aboard, the Patna hits something in the night and begins to take on water. In a crucial moment that tests his courage, Jim cowers and abandons ship rather than risk his life to save the pilgrims. Tried for shameful dereliction of duty, the guilt-ridden Englishman sets forth to make amends for his past in the remote territory of Patusan.

expect no adventure, though the elements are there. Moreover be shown a window of reality crashing into expectations. A mirror to who we think we are against who we really are.

Historia
Ruthanna Emrys’ Innsmouth Legacy, which began with Winter Tide and continues with Deep Roots, confronts H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos head-on, boldly upturning his fear of the unknown with a heart-warming story of found family, acceptance, and perseverance in the face of human cruelty and the cosmic apathy of the universe. Emrys brings together a family of outsiders, bridging the gaps between the many people marginalized by the homogenizing pressure of 1940s America.

Excellent expansion and improvement
Revisado: 03-05-22
The first book interesting in concept had the short coming of a conflict that did follow the stakes promised. This made for an inresting window, but deflated resolution to the story.
Deep roots solves that problem. There are genuine and interesting builds of tension and stays true to its promise. The author does an excellent job of adding to the Lovecraft world while expressing her own views without being ham-fisted with the execution.
There are great moments of strangeness understanding and genuine revulsion. The Mad one's exploration was a genuine and visceral experience.
Perfect? Why should it be? But is interesting without making me cringe at what could be perceived as political or personal slants and does well of keeping faithful to the Era and to the feeling of Lovecraft.
I'd like to see if the author takes it else where

Inventing the Middle Ages

Historia
In this ground-breaking work, Norman Cantor explains how our current notion of the Middle Ages—with its vivid images of wars, tournaments, plagues, saints and kings, knights and ladies—was born in the 20th century. The medieval world was not simply excavated through systematic research. It had to be conceptually created: it had to be invented, and this is the story of that invention.

Dirt on college professors
Revisado: 05-17-21
I was expecting a history or showcase on the development of the middle ages. what I got was outdated and hyper biographical dirty laundry about the inner workings of Ivy League schools.
its depressingly insightful on the political and faction motivation about academic life, but comes across as a big circle jerk of egos and dated modes of thinking.
narration was excellent and was posh enough to really feel like a stuffy college professional was spilling the beans.
while insightful, not what I was hoping for.

Flatland, like our own world, is on the verge of the millenium. On the last day of the year 1999, a Square—hitherto undistinguished from the other shapes of his two-dimensional world—receives the Gospel of Three Dimensions, revealed to that world's flat inhabitants only once every a thousand years. Transformed by a truth he is unable to conceal, he is promptly condemned as a heretic.

An exhaustive allegory for culture and perspective
Revisado: 04-29-21
the performance is very mechanical, but fitting. The thing a seemingly indulgent way to create a culture with echoes of our own. Eventually this pays off. The exposition showing tangible problems in a very abstract setting.

Revisado: 07-18-18
this book was an important and critical look into doing things creatively in the process and doing so. If you work on art or writing her anything remotely create of this book is important to show you how to work on those things. I would highly encourage anybody that's in the creative Endeavor to actually sit down and look at this book not only once but twice maybe 500 times.

was expecting more folklore... got monster quest
Revisado: 05-20-18
the book is passable is your a firm believer of the whole cryptozoology thing... but it becomes cringey with some of its thin attempts to look objective.
there are a few bits of good interesting folklore, but the psudo-science "what if" kinda mucks up the interesting bits.
And the author often tried to equate one social standing/job with credibility. like a cop or a banker never lied....
not a bad book, but it was a chore.

The Monster of Karth has risen once more. Quin Tern of Azbar has met his fate, and his council has borne the price of crossing Raz i'Syul Arro. Now, as the cruel walls of the city fade into the winter storms at his back, Raz rides north, seeking to take the High Priest Talo Brahnt up on an offer he never should have refused. A necessary evil
Revisado: 12-16-17
Again BOC doesn't pull his punches, and does a great job of taking typical heroic moments and twisting them dark. Raz, the Monster of Carth and the Layoren act as great foils to one another. The story and setting are vivid and the characters act in believe able ways.
My only criticism is in the Citadel itself, or how the Layoren act within.
The author establishes the rules well, but the sense of them, for the amount of time spent on them, is still very vague.
other than that. Great book!
