Historia
Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.

Unexpected favorite
Revisado: 05-05-25
Growing up, my dad often talked about this miniseries as being one of his favorite shows ever made. I was made aware that the show was based on a book a few months ago and picked this one up, not expecting much. I am stunned at the authors, ability to create believable Character characters with incredible amounts of depth. I did not expect to love this book as much as I did, but it is absolutely one of my new favorites. A fantastic read if you’ve never tried it.

Historia
The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

Prophetic work
Revisado: 04-13-25
I first read Timothy Snyder‘s on freedom last summer. I’ve never been so moved by an author’s grasp of current events in the past. In this book, on tyranny, which pre-dates on freedom, Timothy Snyder once again grasps things that now have come to pass, but that had not yet when he wrote this. His work is a call to all who are paying attention that we need to do more than just watch the events of our time.

Historia
With the end of the Civil War, the nation recommenced its expansion onto traditional Indian tribal lands, setting off a wide-ranging conflict that would last more than three decades. In an exploration of the wars and negotiations that destroyed tribal ways of life even as they made possible the emergence of the modern United States, Peter Cozzens gives us both sides in comprehensive and singularly intimate detail.

Sweeping narrative of the long and brutal Indian Wars
Revisado: 04-09-25
This book was my first deep dive into the more complete story of the Indian Wars. While I have read other things more focused on the battle of the Little Bighorn, this book provided context for that dramatic event and really highlighted the brutal and unfair treatment of the government against the various native tribes. I’m not entirely sure this is all there is to know, but I think the author did a great job getting me started unknowing more.

This book was a lot of things, including very long. I’ve enjoyed the entire series and it’s neat to see the first arc brought to a close. I won’t provide spoilers, but I am very glad to have found this series.

Historia
A sweeping narrative that remakes our understanding of perhaps the most consequential period in American history, The Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic shows how the great contest of that age is also the great contest of our age—and serves as a necessary reminder of how young and fragile our democracy truly is.

Great overview of often overlooked history
Revisado: 01-01-25
I really appreciated the author’s depth and analysis each of the concepts of this incredibly important era of American history. I also like how the author continuously checked in on abolitionist and their viewpoints of these other issues which were occurring within this era. It really brings it all nicely together. Sinha does a nice job really encapsulating why it all mattered.

Historia
Timothy Snyder has been called “the leading interpreter of our dark times.” As a historian, he has given us startling reinterpretations of political collapse and mass killing. As a public intellectual, he has turned that knowledge toward counsel and prediction, working against authoritarianism here and abroad. His book On Tyranny has inspired millions around the world to fight for freedom. Now, in this tour de force of political philosophy, he helps us see exactly what we’re fighting for.

Revisado: 11-27-24
I think one of my favorite parts about this book was how it made me rethink many of my perceptions of what is going on in the world today. With attack on democracy from every direction, Timothy Snyder provides clarity of how the past informs our present and helps us plan for our future.

Creative and Well-crafted
Revisado: 11-02-24
Having read other things about John Brown’s raid this book really brought to life a perspective on “the old man.“ I really enjoyed the authors crafting of onion, and how the ending really brings the whole story to the point, which was that John Brown was a messenger bringing change to America. Great and highly recommend it!

Evangelical Christians are perhaps the most polarizing—and least understood—people living in America today. In his seminal new book, The Kingdom, the Power, and the Glory, journalist Tim Alberta, himself a practicing Christian and the son of an evangelical pastor, paints an expansive and profoundly troubling portrait of the American evangelical movement.

Thank you so much Tim Alberta for doing the work to find at least an answer For the things I have felt over these last several years. This book helped my heart in a lot of ways.

Historia
The murder of Abraham Lincoln set off the greatest manhunt in American history, the pursuit and capture of John Wilkes Booth. From April 14 to April 26, 1865, the assassin led Union cavalry and detectives on a wild 12-day chase through the streets of Washington, D.C., across the swamps of Maryland, and into the forests of Virginia, while the nation, still reeling from the just-ended Civil War, watched in horror and sadness.

Historia
Through historical newspaper accounts and the personal letters of soldiers, the events leading up to the battle and the battle itself are stunningly recreated. You will enter the mind of Robert E. Lee as he makes the fateful decision to cross the Potomac River and take the offensive. You will feel the frustration of Abraham Lincoln as he struggles to convince George McClellan to fight. And you will stand side-by-side with foot soldiers as the peaceful Maryland countryside explodes.

Excellent read
Revisado: 08-14-24
I really enjoyed how this book helped bring focus on why the battle at Antietam was a pivotal moment in the American Civil War. Obviously the death toll makes it significant, but the author really helps the reader understand the greater significance of the politics surrounding that victory.
