A unique look into the past
Revisado: 12-03-24
An inspirational look at historical figure at the ages of 18, some already accomplished and some yet to be. I thought it was a truly unique way to present a comparison of the coming of age time for these historical figures. It read like a narrative history, deepening the picture in your mind.
Alice- pay no attention to the 1-star review given earlier for this book. That person was looking for a dry boring read and were disappointed that they didn’t find it with your book! From a 40 year old who is still 18, thanks for the refresh in mindset!

Historia
In a life of extraordinary drama, Jane Boleyn was catapulted from relative obscurity to the inner circle of King Henry VIII. As powerful men and women around her became victims of Henry's ruthless and absolute power - including her own husband and sister-in-law Queen Anne Boleyn - Jane's allegiance to the volatile monarchy was sustained and rewarded. But the price for her loyalty would eventually be her undoing and the ruination of her name

Historia
Henry V reigned over England for only nine years and four months and died at the age of just thirty-five, but he looms over the landscape of the late Middle Ages and beyond. The victor of Agincourt, he is remembered as the acme of kingship, a model to be closely imitated by his successors. William Shakespeare deployed Henry V as a study in youthful folly redirected to sober statesmanship. For one modern medievalist, Henry was, quite simply, “the greatest man who ever ruled England.”

Reads like a novel
Revisado: 10-08-24
Dan Jones always does an amazing job with his writing and this is no exception! He tells the story as if it were happening in the present tense, something he notes he endeavored to do on purpose. And in its intended way, it deepens the story so much more. Looking forward to more than one listen to this!

Historia
The history books have cast Katherine of Aragon, the first queen of King Henry VIII of England, as the ultimate symbol of the Betrayed Woman, cruelly tossed aside in favor of her husband’s seductive mistress, Anne Boleyn. Katherine’s sister, Juana of Castile, wife of Philip of Burgundy and mother of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, is portrayed as “Juana the Mad,” whose erratic behavior included keeping her beloved late husband’s coffin beside her for years.

Imagine you could travel back to the 14th century. What would you see? What would you smell? More to the point, where are you going to stay? And what are you going to eat? Ian Mortimer shows us that the past is not just something to be studied; it is also something to be lived. He sets out to explain what life was like in the most immediate way, through taking you to the Middle Ages. The result is the most astonishing social history book you are ever likely to read: evolutionary in its concept, informative and entertaining in its detail.

A new take on a old story
Revisado: 06-21-24
I loved the way Dr. Borman wove the story of Anne and Elizabeth to show much Elizabeth honored her mother. It’s very common to hear that Elizabeth never mentioned her mother and wanted to distance herself from her, but this disproved that theory completely. I devoured this book!!

Since William the Conqueror, duke of Normandy, crossed the English Channel in 1066 to defeat King Harold II and unite England’s various kingdoms, 41 kings and queens have sat on Britain’s throne. “Shining examples of royal power and majesty alongside a rogue’s gallery of weak, lazy, or evil monarchs,” as Tracy Borman describes them in her sparkling chronicle, Crown & Sceptre.

Historia
The first Plantagenet king inherited a blood-soaked kingdom from the Normans and transformed it into an empire stretched at its peak from Scotland to Jerusalem. In this epic history, Dan Jones vividly resurrects this fierce and seductive royal dynasty and its mythic world. We meet the captivating Eleanor of Aquitaine, twice queen and the most famous woman in Christendom; her son, Richard the Lionheart, who fought Saladin in the Third Crusade; and King John, a tyrant who was forced to sign Magna Carta, which formed the basis of our own Bill of Rights.

Every book I’ve read of Dan’s has been engaging and a joy in which to listen. He has an innate way of telling a recount of history that reads like a novel. I’ve long been wanting to do a deeper dive into the Plantagenet Dynasty and I’m glad I waited for Dan’s book.

Historia
Architecturally breathtaking and rich in splendid art and décor, Hampton Court Palace has been the stage of some of the most important events in British history, such as the commissioning of King James’s version of the Bible, the staging of many of Shakespeare’s plays, and Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation ball. The Palace takes us on “an entertaining journey into the past” (Kirkus Reviews) as it reveals the ups and downs of royal history and illustrates what was at play politically, socially, and economically at the time.

Loved every part of this book.
Revisado: 01-08-24
Gareth is one of my favorite historical authors and podcasters to listen to, because he has such a sense of humor and such a unique and way of expressing ideas and stories. It’s rare that I’d laugh during a nonfiction book, but somehow I achieve that with his books. Even though this book is not read by him, I could still make out his tell tale hilarious ways of putting things. I loved how it wove the tale of Hampton Court from the beginning to now with the history that surrounded and shaped it. I can tell it took 2.5 years to write! Well done Gareth!
