A pleasant mystery
Revisado: 02-27-24
It’s nice to listen to a mystery with a gothic twist but not gory. There’s enough clues to solve it but not too soon. The similarities between the two main characters offers sympathetic bonding.

Who knew this region was so important in history?
Revisado: 11-29-23
Once again I was taken into a new world of history. I like the way he almost rushes through his material as if there is so much more to say and he is constrained by the limitations of time and space. But the pieces of history are placed together in a way that teaches more than dry facts and dates. We are swept into the flow of events. It’s as if Asia Minor is the keystone of the past.

Historia
It's been over a decade since Nora left her hometown of Scupper Island, Maine, and very seldom looked back. She's carved out a successful life in Boston, where no one knows her as the awkward girl with the delinquent sister and the dad who left, but a not-as-dramatic-as-it-sounds brush with death has her taking stock of her life. Inspired to reconnect with her prickly mother and snarky teenage niece, Nora returns home for the summer, where she's forced to face the people she's spent the last ten years trying to avoid.

Just right
Revisado: 11-07-23
This book was just the right balance of interesting and satisfying. The author knows how to create the environment that matches women’s happiness and fears. I like meeting the flawed characters and seeing them struggle and succeed. Well done.

Dr Harl did it again!
Revisado: 07-03-23
I knew smack little about Alexander the Great except what was taught in high school (virtually nothing). Now I see his influence all around. So young, so ruthless, so charismatic. In a way I felt like I was listening to a science fiction story from another world because the names and places were unfamiliar. Then he’d mention how that fits into the current world, and I’d understand it again. This is not a trivial course but a rich dive.

What is so important about the year 1215? There are some history buffs who may be able to tell you that 1215 is the year the Magna Carta was signed, but there are even fewer who know that King John of England’s acceptance of this charter was only one of four major, world-changing events of this significant year. In fact, the social, cultural, political, geographical, and religious shifts that occurred in this year alone had such a huge impact on the entire world, it warrants an entire course of study for anyone truly interested in the pivotal points of history....

By understanding the dramatic story of the Ottoman Empire - from its early years as a collection of raiders and conquerors to its undeniable power in the 15th and 16th centuries to its catastrophic collapse in the wreckage of the First World War - one can better grasp the current complexities of the Middle East. Befitting a story of such epic scope and grandeur, every lecture is a treasure trove of historical insights into the people, events, themes, and locales responsible for shaping the story of this often-overlooked empire.

The Ottoman Empire is a great listen.
Revisado: 04-10-23
Once again Karl has put together an in-depth and rich history that is accessible to my western ears. I knew very little about the Ottoman Empire before this lecture series and I wasn’t sure I wanted to. But I am so glad that I listened. He takes you back to the late Byzantine era and leads you through the fall of Constantinople until the 21st century. I love to listen to his lectures. Keep’em coming!

Byzantium is too-often considered merely the "eastern rump" of the old Roman Empire, a curious and even unsettling mix of the classical and medieval. Yet it was, according to Professor Harl, "without a doubt the greatest state in Christendom through much of the Middle Ages," and well worth our attention as a way to widen our perspective on everything from the decline of imperial Rome to the rise of the Renaissance.

Historia
The word "barbarian" quickly conjures images of Attila the Hun and Genghis Khan. Yet few people realize these men belong to a succession of nomadic warriors who emerged from the Eurasian steppes to conquer civilizations. It's a part of ancient and medieval history that's often overlooked, but for an accurate view of how the world evolved, it's essential. Covering some 6,000 miles and 6,000 years, this eye-opening course illuminates how a series of groups pushed ever westward, coming into contact with the Roman Empire, Han China, and distant cultures from Iraq to India.

We're all getting older every day, and scientific research has shown that starting in our 20s, some brain functions begin a linear decline. But is old age all doom and gloom? Not at all! While it's true that some functions in the aging brain decline, neuroscientists have discovered that many other brain functions remain stable - or even improve - as we age.

Revisado: 11-23-22
This course is chocked full of hopeful and scary information. The instructor has a clear voice with a engaging sense of humor. There is an odd moment later in the course where it sounds like he dropped something and picked it up. I actually liked that because it helped create the feeling of being in person.

After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

A delightful journey
Revisado: 09-22-22
I decided to listen to this one on a whim and am very glad I did. The story of the 100 year old man’s decision to sneak out of his room and run away from the old folks home was engaging. Then the author took us back and forth between the current time and on a whimsical journey through his past 100 years. I’m a fan !
