Nasal, overly-breathy narrator
Revisado: 12-20-22
I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish listening to the story. For some reason, the narration and main character voices are nasal, whiney, and entirely too breathy. It’s distracting. I can hardly pay any attention to the story.

Ew

First, this particular narrator is one of my least favorite. I don’t know why, but her voice (especially when doing male voices) really grates my nerves.
Secondly… this book is triggering. I just want to know the main character is in therapy, because she’s going to need it.
I mean… I might need it after listening. It’s pretty disturbing.

Historia
Visiting her family's South Carolina estate, socialite Gray Godfrey wakes from a night out to an empty bed. Her husband, Paul, is gone, and a thrashing hangover has wiped her memory clean. At first, she's relieved for the break from her tumultuous marriage; perhaps Paul just needed some space. But when his car is found abandoned on the highway, Gray must face the truth: Paul is gone. And Gray may not want him found. Her life is unraveling. When a stranger named Annie calls claiming to know Paul's whereabouts, Gray reluctantly accepts her help.

Good Listen
Revisado: 09-29-20
The story was interesting - lots of twists and turns.
I adore Bahni Turpin. She is an excellent narrator. I would’ve enjoyed the book more had she narrated it all alone.
I’ve heard Amy McFaddin narrate before and enjoyed it. I think as a southerner I was distracted by some minor flaws in her continuity of accent. It’s likely that people who are not southern Americans will enjoy it, and likely others may as well. It just wasn’t my perfect cup of tea.

Worst. Accents. Ever
Revisado: 04-24-20
First, I have to say, the story line is interesting enough that I did not give up, which is saying a lot for an audio selection of this length. However, Kevin Pierce's accents made the marathon listen difficult.
It's a shame, because overall, Mr. Pierce is a VERY good narrator. As long as the character is a typical, "average white" American, his reading is like butter for the ears. He sounds like a "good ole' boy", as we say in Texas, and his voice is soothing and interesting.
But this book has gang members who are not white (and really should not sound like they are), Hispanics, Cajuns, Cubans... and all of those accents sound like a terrible blend of good ole' white boy and Transylvanian or something similar. It's like listening to Dracula say things only a Cajun should be saying. It's very confusing.
As a Cajun raised in the places he's reading about and someone who has always lived in a multicultural setting, it was physically painful how bad his accents were.
Now, to be fair, Cajun accents are difficult and not very common. Very few people can pull it off. But most Americans have a lot of experience with most of the other accents, and none of them sound right. If you're going to be a pro, and you're going to read accents, you really have to get it right.
This is not that.
The story itself is very good, and any other section read by this narrator is good... but if you are accent-sensitive as I am, you may want to just read the book yourself or find another version.

Historia
In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place.... The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease.

Can I give it 6 stars?
Revisado: 10-10-17
I really like the voice the King men have developed by working together. Great partnership! Very nicely crafted.
I also loved the narration.
All-in-all, an excellent work by everyone involved. Wish I could give it more than 5 stars.

Around the world humans are hallucinating after sleepless nights. In a sterile, underground institute the forecasters keep reporting the same events. And in the backwoods of Texas, a 16-year-old girl is about to be caught up in a fierce, ethereal battle. Meet Roya Stark. She drowns every night in her dreams, spends her hours reading classic literature to avoid her family's ridicule, and is prone to premonitions - which are becoming more frequent.

Feels like a copy of a copy of a copy.
Revisado: 06-16-16
I'm getting tired of young women in books who are saving the world while doubting themselves constantly, all the while, trying to decide between which of two boys she wants to love. There were a few interesting twists and turns that I appreciated, but overall, I felt underwhelmed.
Self-esteem in a main character would be awesome.
Friendships with other girls would be awesome.
And although the reader had a variety of accents and shades of tone at her disposal, I just didn't personally connect with her voice.
I think Ms. Nofke has potential, and I hope she keeps writing. She is a creative storyteller deep down, I think. If only she would be brave enough to embrace that and tell a story all her own.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

I think I just found my newest favorite book.
Revisado: 10-23-15
What did you love best about The Martian?
Everything.
What does R. C. Bray bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
R.C. Bray is hilarious! His performance was outstanding. Seriously, give this guy an award. Also, I didn't have to read the scientific jargon, which may have been meticulous or distracting. So I really appreciated it. Good reading, mister! You get a gold star.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I don't think I've ever been so desperate for a character to survive, so disappointed with difficulty faced, or so elated when something went right. The main character often survives through difficulties by his wit and sense of humor, which is pretty impressive.
