Historia
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

Didn't Like the Narration
Revisado: 02-04-25
The narrator's tone struck me as supercilious. I quit listening after a few chapters. It's a shame, because I wanted to learn more about Frederick Douglass.

Historia
Most Civil War battles took place along major roads, railroads, and waterways. And yet this perspective hasn't been fully explored when it comes to Gettysburg. Gettysburg Ranger and historian Troy Harman draws on a lifetime of researching the Civil War and more than thirty years of studying the terrain of Gettysburg and south-central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland to reframe the story of the Battle of Gettysburg.

Much detail, with interesting observations that were new to me, even though I have read several books on this subject. However, it was too tiresome for me to finish.

Historia
Although he took command of the Army of the Potomac only three days before the first shots were fired at Gettysburg, Union general George G. Meade guided his forces to victory in the Civil War's most pivotal battle. Commentators often dismiss Meade when discussing the great leaders of the Civil War. But in this long-anticipated book, Kent Masterson Brown draws on an expansive archive to reappraise Meade's leadership during the Battle of Gettysburg.

All about Meade
Revisado: 01-06-25
This is a very detailed narration of the Gettysburg campaign from Meade’s perspective. Like Meade himself, the narrative is not flashy, but solid, and places Meade’s actions in the context of what he knew at the time. The author explains why he holds a high opinion of Meade, and engages with others who were critical, both at the time and in histories of the battle. The narrator is clear, but has some odd pronunciations of names.

From the acclaimed military historian, a new history of the outbreak of World War I: the dramatic stretch from the breakdown of diplomacy to the battles - the Marne, Ypres, Tannenberg - that marked the frenzied first year before the war bogged down in the trenches. In Catastrophe 1914, Max Hastings gives us a conflict different from the familiar one of barbed wire, mud, and futility.

Okay book. Narration not for me.
Revisado: 11-20-24
This is a history of the diplomacy leading us to the war, and the five months of fighting in 1914–mostly the latter. Lots of detail about individual experiences of soldiers and civilians. This was okay, but ultimately did not hold my interest. The narrator’s tone struck me as supercilious. His vowels in French names seemed to me to be way off. I became annoyed and quit listening about halfway through.

Endzone tells the story of how college football's most successful and respected program nearly lost it all in less than a decade and entirely of its own doing. It is a story of hubris, greed, and betrayal, a tale more suited to Wall Street than the world's top public university.

Historia
American author, scholar, and satirist H.L. Mencken wrote The American Language in 1919, intending to defend American speech from prescriptivist critics. "America itself is unutterably vulgar. But vulgarity, after all, means no more than a yielding to natural impulses in the face of conventional inhibitions, and that yielding to natural impulses is at the heart of all healthy language-making."

Interesting book.
Revisado: 11-25-23
If you are interested in words and phrases and the differences between British and American English, you will enjoy this book. The book is over 100 years old, but it did not seem terribly antiquated to me. As regards the narration, the reader used many pronunciations that I have never heard of before. Perhaps she knows more about it than I do???

Historia
When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder. None of them had ever met the elderly woman. The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Massively disappointing
Revisado: 03-09-20
I disagree with many of the other reviewers. This book struck me as an aggregation of all available data, largely from personal diaries, rather than a cohesive narrative. In this regard, it falls way short of Larson's other books, such as The Garden of the Beasts. The Splendid and the Vile has huge amounts of very minor (trivial?) details without any particular point that I could discern. It may be the raw material of a story, rather than the finished product.
The worst of it, though, is the narration. It was clipped, unserious, and obnoxious throughout. The voices, especially those of the Americans, were absurd. I can't imagine what the narrator was thinking of, as he has been very good in other books i have listened to, e.g., Ken Follett's novels. Perhaps if the book had been more than a compilation of miscellany, the narrator would have had something to convey.
All this begs the question of why I listened to the whole book. I kept thinking as I listened that I was going to return it. Then, some very interesting fact would come along that I had not known. So, I kept on listening . . . . If the book had been better edited, and the narration more straightforward, I probably would have given it three stars.

The Bible reveals glorious things. And yet we often miss its power because we read it the same way we read any other book. In Reading the Bible Supernaturally, best-selling author John Piper teaches us how to read the Bible in light of its divine author. In doing so, he highlights the Bible's unique ability to reveal God to humanity in a way that informs our minds, transforms our hearts, and ignites our love.

Historia
As early as 1941, Allied victory in World War II seemed all but assured. How and why, then, did the Germans prolong the barbaric conflict for three and a half more years? In The German War, acclaimed historian Nicholas Stargardt draws on an extraordinary range of primary source materials - personal diaries, court records, and military correspondence - to answer this question. He offers an unprecedented portrait of wartime Germany, bringing the hopes and expectations of the German people to vivid life.

Brutal
Revisado: 01-10-18
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes, I would recommend this to anyone interested in the perspective of the German people on their experience of the war years 1939-1945. I would caution anyone that the facts are very brutal, and it is almost brutalizing to listen to the book. I have read a lot about World War II, but there was a great deal in this book that I did not know.
