Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Interesting but disappointing
Revisado: 11-14-18
The secrets chosen were interesting to hear about, the acting and sound effects brought it to life, but when it came to the commentaries explaining why the secrets were...secret, I found that their foundational basis appeared to be from a Marxist/communist bias. Whenever antiestablishment, rebelling, colonialism, or suppression is used as a vehicle to describe negative history (beyond the actual documentation)...I hesitate to accept the persons view due to it appearing to be contaminated with Marxist/communistic propaganda instead of historical truth. I want to see history as it was, blemishes and all, not as someone’s propaganda wants me to see it. Thanks though

A masterpiece. Hats off to the narrator for his perseverance in recording. Such a story is worth the effort.

Historia
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

Historia
When thirteen-year-old Max Tilt happens upon his great-great-great-grandfather Jules Verne’s unfinished, unpublished manuscript, The Lost Treasures, he doesn’t realize that he’s found the answers to all his problems. And Max has a lot of problems—his mother is sick, his father is out of work, and his home is about to be foreclosed on. But when Max and his cousin Alex discover that Verne’s last work reveals everything he wrote was fact, not fiction, they realize that the book holds the key to something incredibly valuable. A treasure that can save his house—and maybe his entire family.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-19-17
Sadly the story was not what I had hoped for. The story felt one dimensional. The main character came off as the whiny brat you come across at the mall or while shopping, except this one had some serious issues with handling the real world. Not a character I even wanted to relate to.
I wondered if it’d be different if I had read it....because the narrator didn’t help. He paused a lot and when it came to character dialogue his inflection was distracting if not bad.
Overall, I endured the whole story hoping it would get better as it went on....unfortunately it didn’t. I like what I’ve heard from Peter Lerangis before, but I didn’t expect this one. Who knows, this may be a great read....but I wouldn’t call it a great listen.

Dull
Revisado: 07-06-17
A long story with a lot of describing. Virtually no character growth and a lot of forgettable characters. Little dialogue, and when it's there it is either cynical or contaminated with cussing. It was a long burdensome book that I endured, hoping it would pay off in the end....it didn't. The performance was good and the sound effects added to the experience, but I will not be recommending this to anyone...anytime.

I purchased a copy of the book halfway through listening because it is jam packed with amazing research. A must read/listen for anyone interested on the origins and influences of western civilization and/or the effects Christianity had on the world from the Roman Empire to today. You won't be disappointed.

Tasteless and disappointing dialogue
Revisado: 06-16-17
I've come to enjoy the Star Wars audiobooks, especially when Marc Thompson is narrating. The voice talent and sound effects really add to the experience. Unfortunately "Thrawn" was different for me. The excessive flow of curse words was a surprising departure from the usual Star Wars stories. I found the language distracting and a turn off. I endured the story far more than I enjoyed it. I will sadly be warning folks of this book rather than recommending it.
