This is the third story of Li Du and Hansa. I actually liked this story much better than the second story. It was nice that she brought Lady Chen and Li Du's cousin back from the first book.

The story flowed very smoothly, there were lots of interesting tibits of how life in the city went on. And how the government worked, along with all the different agencies. Being someone who is interested in Chinese history, I enjoyed learning more about the exams for entry into the government employ. She brought in how the students prepare themselves, what goes on during the exams, and how people manage to cheat.

The mystery was convoluted enough that you could not easily guess who committed the murders at the beginning of the story and why. She worked in the matter of Li Du's mentor's execution and we learn more about the circumstances surrounding it.

Overall a very enjoyable read. The narrator does a very good job.

Robert Van Gulik's Judge Dee stories are wonderful crime/mystery stories. They flow very well. They give you an insight into how life was from the commoner to the upper class in China during the Tang Dynasty (618-906 AD/CE). The stories are about the district judge/magistrate Di Renjie and the court cases/mysteries that he solves in the different district posts that he holds.

I was introduced to the character from the movie "Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon". When I realized it was based off of a book, I hunted down the author and read all the books. I LOVED them.

The only down side is the narrator gives the judge a british sounding voice. It would have been better with someone narrating with a voice that sounded more asian in its inflections.

I came across this book when I was looking for something similar to the Judge Dee mystery stories.

I found this story interesting to listen to. It takes place during the early 1700's. The main character is Li Du, who was an imperial librarian. He arrives in the Dayan on the Tibetian border in time for a solar eclipse. A Jesuit priest is found murdered and the story takes off.

The story line flowed well and you learn a little about the chinese culture in the area where the story takes place. A very good read. An "Audible 20 Review Sweepstakes entry"

What made the experience of listening to Hiss of Death the most enjoyable?

The reader was really good. I enjoy that the series so far has the same person reading all the books.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I tried to listen in one sitting, but the discoursing by the different characters about a variety of topics, got a bit tiring.

Any additional comments?

The topic of cancer is a serious subject, and I was glad to see it presented in a way that would bring it to more people. I am a cancer survivor, and the book does present the subject of testing, treatment options, and life style changes as it truly is. But the frequent discoursing (or ranting) on a variety of topics by different characters and the animals seem to be most of the book. In past books the animals and some humans would discourse on issues/problems, but it was much, much worse in this book. The discoursing got so bad, that I fast forwarded through sections of the book. If you are a serious Mrs Murphy, Tucker and crew fan, it is worth listening to, but steel yourself for the "discoursing". You might need to keep your finger on the fast foward button.

I was thrilled when I saw that they had added Ms. Norton's "Plague Ship" to the audiobook lists. It was just as good as I remembered from reading it as a child. The narator did a good job and the audio flowed well. This is the second of the "Solar Queen" series, and continues the adventure from shortly after the "Sargasso of Space" story.

I had read the Witch World books many years ago and enjoyed them at that time. The enjoyment of the series has been rekindled with this audio version. It was enjoyable to be reintroduced to Simon Tregarath and the Witches of Estcarp. I hope that a number of the other books are brought out. The narrator does a wonderful job with reading the book.
