Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Why????
Revisado: 05-29-24
This could've been great, but the romance saccharine narratives were cloying and unbelievable.
This book did Vietnam veterans, especially the women, a disservice.

Just a good old comfortable story!
Revisado: 03-03-24
I loved this book. The narration starts off flat, initially detracting from the story, but stick with it. At some point the narrator becomes more animated and the story moves forward with vivid imagery. A tale to be told.

Cyrus Shams is a young man grappling with an inheritance of violence and loss: his mother’s plane was shot down over the skies of the Persian Gulf in a senseless accident; and his father’s life in America was circumscribed by his work killing chickens at a factory farm in the Midwest.

Maybe 3 or four books jumbled together. Overly sentimental. Should have ended at the death of Orchida.

Historia
Over the course of a single year, our nameless narrator heroically tries to keep her small brood of four chickens alive despite the seemingly endless challenges that caring for another creature entails. From the 40-below nights of a brutal Minnesota winter to a sweltering summer which brings a surprise tornado, she battles predators, bad luck, and the uncertainty of a future that may not look anything like the one she always imagined. A stunning, brilliantly insightful meditation on life and longing that will stand beside such modern classics as H is for Hawk and Gilead.

Not For Me
Revisado: 03-15-23
This is the most negative story I've ever read, not one positive bit of sunshine in the whole book. I don't like any of the characters...and it's nonfiction!
Where's the humor cited in the publishers blurb...there isn't any. Nothing is funny!
I can't recommend it.

Historia
This is the story of Skip Sands—spy-in-training, engaged in Psychological Operations against the Vietcong—and the disasters that befall him thanks to his famous uncle, a war hero known in intelligence circles simply as the Colonel. This is also the story of the Houston brothers, Bill and James, young men who drift out of the Arizona desert into a war in which the line between disinformation and delusion has blurred away. In its vision of human folly, and its gritty, sympathetic portraits of men and women desperate for an end to their loneliness.

One of the worst books ever!
Revisado: 03-15-22
I still can't figure out the story or the purpose of this book. Having lived through Vietnam, had friends who sacrificed their lives and sanity for that illegal meaningless war, I don't feel it's true horror in this book. It's a story, (supposedly a novel), going nowhere slowly...very slowly. The dialog, and there's a lot of it, is flat, hollow and boringly droll with content uninteresting and convoluted. Who is the audience for this book? And, The National Book Award? Why?
I only finished for book club.

This book devolves into silliness.
What I thought was a mystery, turned out to be an adolescent romance novel. Could not finish.

Worth The Read!
Revisado: 09-02-20
A lot of additional facts about the characters and rivalries inside the East and West Wing of the Trump WH. Wolkoff is not at all how the NYT and Maggie Haberman portrayed her. She really is a victim...albeit a gullible victim of the whole Trump Family and cabal.
What I found interesting was how experienced Wolkoff is, not the amateur "event planner" the media and the WH have portrayed her as, but rather a true professional having worked at Vogue doing all their major events like the MOMA, under Anna Wintour, for over a decade.
The revelations about missing Trump inauguration funds is also at the heart of the book. A lot of surprises...and Wolkoff has the receipts! Worth it!
