Historia
Belén Dolores Itzel del Toro wants the normal stuff: to experience love or maybe have a boyfriend or at least just lose her virginity. But nothing is normal in East Oakland. Her father left her family. She’s at risk of not graduating. And Leti, her super-Catholic, nerdy-ass best friend, is pregnant—by the boyfriend she hasn’t told her parents about, because he’s Black, and her parents are racist.

Absolutely loved this book!
Revisado: 02-14-24
As someone who grew up in the Bay, this book made me homesick in the best ways. Not only with the descriptions of Oakland/Fruitvale, but also with the familiarity of each character. I feel like I grew up with Belén and Leti too! I’m so moved by the heart of this story and loved witnessing it all unfold.

Historia
For most of her life, Aaliyah's home situation hasn't been great, but she's at least had her childhood best friend and role as a cross-country star to balance it out. But once she got outed by a church elder last spring, everything came undone—including Aaliyah. Now senior year is about to start and she is determined to come back faster and wiser. No more letting other people define her. No more losing herself to their expectations.

Beautiful debut novel!
Revisado: 04-17-23
Erika Turner does a tremendous job building out the world of a 17 year old at the precipice of adolescence and emerging adulthood. The storyline is captivating and left me anchored in the reminder that true growth and meaningful connection come from vulnerability. And even when our microcosms feel like they’re caving in, what matters most will stay standing. So grateful that these lessons are intertwined with such inclusive characters that you can’t help but love!
