Lady Emily Hardcastle is an eccentric widow with a secret past. Florence Armstrong, her maid and confidante, is an expert in martial arts. The year is 1908 and they've just moved from London to the country, hoping for a quiet life. But it is not long before Lady Hardcastle is forced out of her self-imposed retirement. Nobody knows what happened to Sarah Cook. The beautiful blonde teenager disappeared 15 years ago, the same night her parents were brutally murdered in their suburban Ohio home. Her boyfriend, Brad Stockton - black and from the wrong side of the tracks - was convicted of the murders and is now on death row. I have enjoyed every Roxanne Weary novel
Revisado: 07-02-23
This (and all the Roxanne novels) have been very enjoyable reads with good narrators. I’ve listened to all of them currently on audible and liked every single one. I hope Kristen Lepionka writes another!

Historia
Ada promised herself she would never go back to the Trace, to her unbearable life on the swamp, and to her harsh father in Mississippi. But now, after running away to Baton Rouge and briefly knowing a different kind of life, she finds herself with nowhere to go but back home. Matilda, daughter of a sharecropper, is from the other side of the Trace. Doing what she can to protect her family from the whims and demands of some particularly callous locals is an ongoing struggle, so she forms a plan to go north.

Narrator Ruined It For Me
Revisado: 07-02-23
I just couldn’t listen to one more word from this narrator. Her voice even bothered my husband when he passed through the room. The fake accent, breathy and strangely phrased speech and singsong voice ruined the listening experience. I think I would like the story , so I have it reserved at the library and will pick it up tomorrow. I will try to remember to update this review when I’ve finished the story. Right now, I have 8h 40 m lift on Audible and will never be able to listen to it. I even tried to increase the speed of the narration but there is no saving this.
