Well Written Thriller
Revisado: 06-02-24
Like the most well written spy thriller novels, you can’t take your ear buds out till the very end. I’ve read all of this author’s books and this is his best.

Historia
In That Time of Year, Garrison Keillor looks back on his life and recounts how a Brethren boy with writerly ambitions grew up in a small town on the Mississippi in the 1950s and, seeing three good friends die young, turned to comedy and radio. Through a series of unreasonable lucky breaks, he founded A Prairie Home Companion and put himself in line for a good life, including mistakes, regrets, and a few medical adventures.

Fascinating Journey of a Unique American
Revisado: 01-29-21
I found this memoir - read with the author's unique style - to be heartwarming, insightful and honest. Mr. Keillor is quite frank about his luck in life, the mistakes he made because he wanted to focus on his craft, the heights he reached (to his surprise) and the depths he was compelled to suffer from the calculated indifference of an organization, NPR, he helped put on the map. If you enjoyed his weekly shows, Prairie Home Companion, you will love this memoir. David E. Robbins

You Can't Make Up Facts
Revisado: 05-27-20
As an attorney for 45 years, having represented individuals falsely accused of misconduct, I have learned to carefully research the facts and apply logic before coming to a conclusion. The older I get, the more open-minded I've become. I approached this autobiography with some concern since reviewers, aside from Brett Stephens of The New York Times, have not been kind. If you keep an open mind, you will appreciate his defense of baseless, vengeful allegations, his many stories about his movies and the gifted people he's met along the way and be thankful that in his wife of many years Mr. Allen found someone who appreciates him and loves him. Keep an open mind. You'll learn a great deal and laugh a lot. David E. Robbins, Esq.

But when Mr. Wonderful is found murdered, the three ex-POWs are accused of the crime, and the multibillion-dollar deal threatens to unravel.

David Freed - Write More Cordell Logan.
Revisado: 04-12-20
While I'm a writer of non-fiction law books and articles, I also write briefs and motions and have learned to cater to my audience to make compelling arguments (albeit not the layman) by catching her/his interest at the outset and bringing real life into the suggestions I make to fellow attorneys. I wouldn't know how to convey ideas with the wit, charm and creativity of Mr. Freed, who has created an adoring and enduring character for all of his Cordell Logan novels. When I recently asked him if there were any more Logan books on the horizon, he said not at this time but that he'd appreciate my telling the mystery reading world about his books. So there go. I listened to all the audios except one; I highly recommend the audios primarily because of the reader. Go find David Freed; you'll be hooked and craving for more.

It’s been over forty years since they were released from the “Hanoi Hilton"—a prisoner of war camp in Vietnam—and three American soldiers and ex-prisoners finally return to Vietnam. As part of an effort by the US government to settle a major trade agreement, these three men have agreed to make peace with one of their most brutal former captors—a guard they dubbed “Mr. Wonderful.” But when Mr. Wonderful is murdered, the three former POWs are the primary suspects and the multi-billion dollar deal threatens to unravel.

Historia
Tyler Cunningham is a detective like no other. He can mimic humanity, but in most cases fails utterly to understand people, why they do the things they do, or act in the ways that they do. His saving grace is an insatiable hunger for knowledge that combines with an ability to make connections from a series of seemingly unrelated data-points that other people miss; this continually pulls him into other peoples' problems.

A Lot in a Short Story
Revisado: 06-16-19
I've read all of Jamie Sheffield's Adirondack mysteries and while i'm not a fan of short stories, Mickey Slips is an exception. To appreciate its concise style and wit, you need to have read the full length Tyler Cunningham books so that you can understand the sensitive relationship between the main character, Tyler Cunningham, and Mickey, who knows all about Tyler's soul wrenching past. And Jamie even makes Syracuse interesting; go figure. David E. Robbins, Esq.

Creative mysteries with a twist of wit.
Revisado: 06-16-19
I'm entranced by the beauty of New York's Adirondacks and by a well written mystery. Having read all of Jamie Sheffield's extremely well written mysteries - with a central character unique to this genre - i was interested to find out whether Here Be Monsters could be enhanced in audio format. It certainly can be. I highly recommend that you first read and then listen to Here Be Monsters. This is Jamie's first full length mystery. The Audible reader is the personification of Tyler Cunningham, no question about it. You are swept into Tyler's world, to his unemotional logic and to his dry wit. Sit back and enjoy the ride. From the brothels and gambling dens of London, through political intrigues and espionage, the action moves to the Mediterranean and the real life character of Thomas Cochrane.

Flashman lives.
Revisado: 10-25-18
Years ago I read and recently I listened to all of GMF's Flashman series, borne away on a magic carpet of creative writing, wit, insight, offensive yet truly unique writing. With the author's death, I was certain we'd seen the last of the Flashman clan; RIP I thought. Then I listened to this first-in-a-growing series tale of Harry's uncle and was pleasantly surprised that while Mr. Brightwell is not George MacDonald Fraser (no one could be), he manages to bring long-ago history to life with a lively jaunt through the early 1800s. As soon as the first audible book ended, I used my much- coveted credit to purchase the second in the series and I'm looking forward to it very much. Give it a shot. You'll be as surprised as I was.
