Historia
For over forty years, criminal defence solicitor Henry Milner has been the go-to lawyer for some of Britain's most notorious criminals including Kenneth Noye and the Brink's-Mat robbers, Freddie Foreman, John 'Goldfinger' Palmer and the gang behind the Millennium Dome raid. Here, the lawyer offers a fascinating insight into life at the top of the profession, lifting the lid on the psychology of those who end up on the wrong side of the law and those who defend them. By turns shocking and hilarious, this remarkable memoir takes us deep into the enigmatic criminal underworld.

Live your life vicariously!
Revisado: 11-29-24
Lord Sumption, when asked why he liked studying history, said he only had one life but one life was not enough for him so he must live other lives “vicariously” through studying history. This book did that for me. All the characters mentioned in this book had illustrious lives and intriguing days. Great to have experienced them “vicariously”.

Historia
Hong Kong has always been many cities to many people: a seaport, a gateway to an empire, a place where fortunes can be dramatically made or lost, a place to disappear and reinvent oneself, and a melting pot of diverse populations from around the globe. A British Crown Colony for 155 years, Hong Kong is now ruled by the Chinese Communist Party. Here, renowned journalist Vaudine England delves into Hong Kong’s complex history and its people—diverse, multi-cultural, cosmopolitan—who have made this one-time fishing village into the world port city it is today.

Excellent writing style. Excellent reading. Learned a lot listening to this. Highly recommended. The fact that the author was a journalist probably helped.

Historia
As divisive as he is beguiling, as misunderstood as he is scrutinised, Boris Johnson is a singular figure. Many of us think we know his story well. His ruthless ambition was evident from his insistence, as a three-year-old, that he would one day be 'world king'. Eton and Oxford prepared him well for a frantic career straddling the dog-eat-dog worlds of journalism and politics. His transformation from bumbling stooge on Have I Got News for You to a triumphant mayor of London was overshadowed only by his colourful personal life, brimming with affairs, scandals and transgressions.

Skip Chapters 27 & 28 on Covid
Revisado: 03-02-23
I bought this audiobook to learn more about Boris Johnson. Chapters 1 to 26 were brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Then the author destroyed his own book by adding two Chapters about Covid itself (as opposed to just Boris Johnson’s handling of it). He was just rambling by then. Why? The book would have been better if he deleted or rewrote those two Chapters. By all means buy this audiobook and enjoy its Chapters 1 to 26, but you may wish to skip the last two Chapters on Covid.

Historia
Andrew Gimson returns with a penetrating and entertaining new account of Boris Johnson's turbulent time as prime minister, from the highs of a landslide election victory to the lows of his car-crash resignation. In Boris Johnson: The Rise and Fall of a Troublemaker at Number 10, Gimson sets out to discover how a man dismissed as a liar, charlatan and tasteless joke was able, despite being written off more frequently than any other British politician of the twenty-first century, to become prime minister.

When it comes to writing about controversial political figures, it can be difficult to write in a balanced way. This author managed to do so. The book is also entertaining. Glad I bought this one.

This intimate, personal biography of Queen Elizabeth II tells the story of her remarkable life, reign and times, from a perspective unlike any other. Gyles Brandreth writes the Queen's tale candidly with grace and sensitivity from the view of someone who met her, talked with her and kept a record of those conversations. Brandreth knew the Queen's husband well and knows the new King and Queen Consort.

I enjoyed listening to this. The style is perfect. And the author actually met both the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, which made his account of events more reliable. 5 stars.

Historia
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Have You Eaten Grandma? written and read by Gyles Brandreth. It can be much harder than it seems; commas, colons, semicolons and even apostrophes can drive us all mad at times, but it riles no one more than the longest-serving resident of Countdown's Dictionary Corner, grammar guru Gyles Brandreth. In this brilliantly funny tirade and guide, Gyles anatomises the linguistic horrors of our times, tells us where we've been going wrong (and why) and shows us how, in future, we can get it right every time.

Historia
Renowned biographer Andrew Morton takes an in-depth look at Britain’s longest reigning monarch, exploring the influence Queen Elizabeth has had on both Britain and the rest of the world for much of the last century. From leading a nation struggling to restore itself after the devastation of the second World War to navigating the divisive political landscape of the present day, Queen Elizabeth has been a reluctant but resolute queen. This is the story of a woman of unflagging self-discipline who will long be remembered as mother and grandmother to Great Britain.

The Narration Was Good
Revisado: 01-07-23
In terms of contents, this book does not offer anything new. You would know 99% of the facts in the book before buying it. The narration, however, was fantastic. It really does bring its contents to live. I am giving this book 5 stars because the narration makes listening to it thorough entertaining and enjoyable, but don’t expect new revelations in it there is none.

The Narration Is Perfect
Revisado: 12-29-22
The narrator did an excellent job bringing the book to life! Enjoyed listening to this. Though I do question some of the factual assertions made. Take the exact type of wine allegedly drunk by Liz Truss and her husband in the privacy of their own home as an example. It’s not a big deal in the scheme of things but has it been fact-checked? If you are not concerned about these things, this is a good book. I listened to it as an entertainment, not as a history lesson, and that worked for me. All in all, glad I chose this.

Historia
Human rights, equality, free speech, privacy, the rule of law. These five ideas are vitally important to the way of life we enjoy today. The battle to establish them in law was long and difficult, and Lord Anthony Lester was at the heart of the 30-year campaign that resulted in the Human Rights Act as well as the struggle for race and gender equality that culminated in the Equality Act of 2010. Today, however, our society is at risk of becoming less equal.

Excellent Delivery | Thought Provoking
Revisado: 03-13-22
A major problem with the press is that it has a strong preference for reporting juicy details with eye catching headlines. Things like law reforms don’t get the same amount of coverage in the press. Lord Lester was a Jewish ethnic minority who spent over 30 years trying to improve the law and the legal system in England for the benefit of everyone in England, and his substantial contributions are often overlooked by general members of the public. This book explains what he thought the shortcomings of the law and the legal system were, what he thought should be done about them, what he had actually done about them, whether it was successful or not, and then he explained why he thought we should take over and keep up the efforts. Listening to this book, I could feel Lord Lester’s conviction, passion and energy. He knew his stuff. He was knowledgeable and insightful. He provided food for thought. All in all, I am glad I listened to the whole book. I did it at one go as once I started I couldn’t put it down. You may feel the same.
