In Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's Mentats of Dune, the thinking machines have been defeated but the struggle for humanity’s future continues. Gilbertus Albans has founded the Mentat School, a place where humans can learn the efficient techniques of thinking machines. Fine on it’s own merits
Revisado: 03-20-23
First on the performance. Scott does a good job, just as he has for the last four books before. Very pleased with the audio quality as well.
Now, onto the story itself. I liked it well enough, I suppose. As someone who is reading the books in timeline chronological order (meaning I haven’t read FH’s original Dune Books) I’m enjoying building up the story, but it feels like quite a bit of this story was just fluff dialogue. There are points where a character’s internal monologue repeats the same exact thought line in slightly different wordings 2-4 times. The story itself is fine, but the writing of the story feels like it’s being fluffed for time.

More than two decades have passed since the events chronicled in The Butlerian Jihad. The crusade against thinking robots has ground on for years, but the forces led by Serena Butler and Irbis Ginjo have made only slight gains; the human worlds grow weary of war, of the bloody, inconclusive swing from victory to defeat. Get ready for Dune: The Machine Crusade.

Great Narration, story drags at points
Revisado: 01-14-23
To preface, I have not read the original Dune series by Frank Herbert. I’m reading these all in story timeline chronological order. I can’t bash these or praise these compared to Frank’s writing, but it was a fine listen. Sometimes people’s inner monologues drag on, sometimes the cymeks seem like caricatures of 1 dimensional bad guys. But I never quit the book. Narration is fantastic, as it was on the last book and as I hope it is in the next

Just Committed to Finishing at this point
Revisado: 09-16-22
At this point in the series, I’m just wanting to finish the series for finishing’s sake. Jesse’s narration and all too similar childlike voices are an ordeal to get through. Loving most of Rick’s writing, but there are moments in the maze where you can’t tell if it’s Rachel, Annabeth, Grover, or Percy talking. I have no doubt he’s a fine narrator but the Percy Jackson books have been disappointing as of yet

Historia
Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. No matter how hard he tries, he can't seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his pre-algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy about the monster incident; he's not even sure he believes himself.

Great Nostalgic Story
Revisado: 07-28-22
Read it as a teenager, listening as an adult. Plenty of details I had forgotten! Not exactly a fan of Jesse’s voices for the characters, but I recognize this is a book for people younger than I am so the silliness did not deter me too much

In this fourth volume, Roland, Eddie, Susannah, and Jake survive Blaine the Mono's final crash, only to find themselves stranded in an alternate version of Topeka, Kansas, one that has been ravaged by the superflu virus. While following the deserted I-70 toward a distant glass palace, Roland recounts a story about a seaside town called Hambry, where he fell in love with a girl named Susan Delgado, and where he and his old tet-mates Alain and Cuthbert battled the forces of John Farson.

Frank Has Grown on me
Revisado: 05-17-22
A fine volume, if a little lackluster compared to the first 3. But what can you expect of a book that is almost entirely flashback? I enjoyed the book well enough and Frank’s narration has grown on me. His impressions are immaculate and his main characters are all, at least to my ear, distinguishable despite coming from the same person. So far the “worst” of the series, but that’s not a knock on it. Greatly recommend this one as well

Historia
In the first book of this brilliant series, Stephen King introduces listeners to one of his most powerful creations: Roland of Gilead, The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which frighteningly mirrors our own, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.

Slow Start, Fantastic Introduction Nonetheless
Revisado: 04-16-22
What a fantastic introduction to the series. I’ve never been a fan of desert settings so the first bit of the book was rougher than the last, but by the end I was listening hard to every word. I can tell this will be an epic journey, and George’s performance was incredible.

Kosh did not feel courageous. Looking at the disko, it was all he could do not to collapse into a quaking, blubbering puddle of terror. He was half certain he was going to die. But the alternative - leaving Emma in the hands of Gheen without even trying to rescue her - was unthinkable. He would not want to live if he had to live with that. In present-day Hopewell, an adult Kosh Feye discovers a sweet and painful piece of his past when he’s rescued by the Lamb Emma.

Fine Finish to an enjoyable series
Revisado: 04-07-22
Just like the title of the review says. I thought that this was a perfectly fine ending for the trilogy. I thought it did a fine job explaining the story while also leaving the paradoxes inherent to time traveling novel for the reader/listener to wonder about. I thought the big twist was a little too heavily implied throughout the book and didn’t get ENOUGH fleshing out in the end, but outside of that I thoroughly enjoy both book and series

Historia
The first time Tucker saw the disk, his father disappeared into thin air. The Reverend Adrian Feye had climbed onto the roof to fix a loose shingle - and suddenly he was gone. An hour later, the Reverend came walking up the road, tattered and sunburned, bringing with him an unspeaking, yellow-haired, dark-eyed girl. He refused to say where he had been, instead declaring that there would be no more prayer in the Feye house: He had lost his faith. Now Tucker’s family is unraveling.

Good Book, Not Hard to follow for time travel readers
Revisado: 01-05-22
I enjoyed this audiobook. Joshua did a very good job, only having the usual drawbacks of single narrator stories (lack of voice diversity mainly) although none of his characters were grating to listen to. I’ve seen some complaints about the hard to follow story and one about a “very apparent dislike of Christianity”. For those confused about the story, remember it’s a trilogy. You aren’t supposed to know everything, and at the end you still probably wont. And if an ending subplot about an ultra conservative fundie Christian trying to rid the world of Autistic people and people with Alzheimers makes you in your faith a little offended, maybe take a chance at introspection.

Historia
Sinner is the story of Marsuvees Black, a force of raw evil who speaks with wicked persuasion that is far more destructive than swords or guns. Beware all who stand in his way. It's also the story of Billy Rediger and Darcy Lange, two unsuspecting survivors of a research project gone bad, who discover that they are perhaps the two most powerful souls in the land. Listen to them or pay a terrible price. And it's the story of Johnny Drake, the one who comes out of the desert and leads the 3,000. Follow him and die.

Good, But Better PHysically
Revisado: 12-21-21
I like the book well enough, even if I think the parallels drawn with it to today's society are quite the stretch. But I really would've appreciated some narration help for Adam. His Billy and Johnny were very good but every female character sounds almost cartoonish, making it hard to take the moments they were in the spotlight seriously.
