The similes 🤦♂️
Revisado: 02-15-25
I decided to get this after reading one of his recent books that I enjoyed, But I can only say that his writing style has improved vastly over the years. This early effort is a little amateurish and the story is a little overly complex. The similes actually made me cringe they were trying so hard.

Some of the most real gay characters I’ve ever encountered in literature
Revisado: 11-22-24
Also, a poignant reminder of those we lost during the AIDS crisis. Anyone wanting to understand a little about what it can be like to be gay should read this book.

If Michael Nava wasn’t writing about gay men and gay sex, he’d be as popular as Grisham or Turow. Excellent writing.

Historia
Vlad Taltos is in love. With a former assassin who may just be better than he is at the Game. Women like this don’t come along every day and no way is he passing up a sure bet. So a wedding is being planned. Along with a shady deal gone wrong and a dead man who owes Vlad money. Setting up the first and trying to deal with the second is bad enough. And then bigger powers decide that Vlad is the perfect patsy to shake the power structure of the kingdom. More's the pity that his soul is sent walkabout to do it.

The new narrator was a rough transition, but…
Revisado: 08-02-24
I chose to give him a shot, even though BSC has been with us for so long. I don’t like his character choice for Kregar, a couple name pronunciation changes, and not having his own voice for Loiosh. But Stilwell is a decent Vlad and I got used to him pretty quickly. At the beginning I listened at 1.2X speed to make it a little snappier. But overall, it wasn’t the worst change possible. Give him a chance.

Not really a “spy novel”
Revisado: 12-22-21
Despite it being set in the Cold War era and having characters engaged in espionage, this is much more a romance story and character study than an ordinary espionage thriller.

Historia
On a cool June evening in 2009, after performing a concert at London's Royal Academy of Music, 20-year-old American flautist Edwin Rist boarded a train for a suburban outpost of the British Museum of Natural History. Home to one of the largest ornithological collections in the world, the Tring museum was full of rare bird specimens whose gorgeous feathers were worth staggering amounts of money to the men who shared Edwin's obsession: the Victorian art of salmon fly-tying. Once inside the museum, the champion fly-tier grabbed hundreds of bird skins - some collected 150 years earlier.

A truly excellent audiobook
Revisado: 05-07-21
While hard to listen to sometimes as Johnson describes the plunder of species in times gone by, I can’t praise the author enough for his excellent prose, his characterizations of the players, and his very complete narrative.
Moreover, Andrews is an exceptional narrator who draws you in and take the effort to execute a cadence that really communicates the text.

I applaud the subject matter, but I found the first person POV and awkward way to tell this particular story. It took me a while to finish it.

Connelly at his best!
Revisado: 02-18-18
Having read the entire Bosch series and now up through all 5 Mickey Haller books, I believe this to be one of his best books. Just the right balance of in and out of the courtroom, and some seriously wild and dramatic twists.
Purchase with confidence. 😊

This used to be one of my least favorite Taltos books...
Revisado: 10-26-17
After Athyra, which still is my least favorite, I never really enjoyed Teckla. But I just have this a listen again -- maybe it's the third time in 20 years I've read (listened to) it -- and with the political climate, and perhaps a little of my own maturity, I have to say this is a much better story than I remember it being. The ideas being evaluated are complex and while occasionally the characters are a little archetypal, there's a lot of interesting discussion of politics and making the word in ones own righteous image. Definitely worth a re-read.

This was entertaining enough for me to finish, and even had one surprising twist, but overall the characters, despite the author's efforts at including quirks, were flat. Very much a pulp spy n
