Historia
"Marley was dead to begin with...." These chillingly familiar words begin the classic Christmas tale of remorse and redemption in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Now R. William Bennett rewinds the story and focuses the spotlight on Scrooge’s miserly business partner, Jacob T. Marley, who was allowed to return as a ghost to warn Scrooge away from his ill-fated path. Why was Marley allowed to return? And why hadn’t he been given the same chance as Ebenezer Scrooge? Or had he?

One of the best of this genre
Revisado: 10-06-22
There is no lack of historical fiction around World War II currently, and I’ve listened to many of them. I absolutely loved this one. The story of how women contributed to the victory in World War II at Bletchley Park was a fascinating journey. I won’t disclose too much about the characters or the plot, but I was particularly fascinated with the character of Beth and how she was portrayed. I loved it.

Through decades of music by one of the best-selling musicians of all time, who created classics like "Fire and Rain" and "Carolina in My Mind", James Taylor has doled out his history in the poetry of his work. Taylor says his early life is, "the source of many of my songs", and Break Shot is a tour of his first 21 years in rich, new detail.

I had no idea about James Taylor’s early life. This was a fascinating listen, and I highly recommend any fan of his to do so. You learn who Suzanne was in Fire and Rain, who believed in his talent early on, and all the singer-songwriter greats who touched his life.

Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

Thank you, Audible!

I’ve been a member of Audible for at least three years now, and this was by far my favorite annual holiday gift sent by Audible to its members. A lovely story, even if predictable, is so appreciated this time of year!

Two days before Christmas 1996, the broken, battered body of Sophie Toscan du Plantier was found outside her vacation home in West Cork, a serene region on Ireland’s idyllic southern coast. Decades later, no one has been charged with the murder, but the aggrieved inhabitants of West Cork are convinced they know who did it - and he still lives among them.

Do you enjoy Serial? You’ll like this
Revisado: 03-07-18
Very similar approach as the Serial podcasts. Engaging, in-depth look into a crime. I found this particular story to be frustrating as the series went on, wondering where the victim was in all this drama. I’m sure that’s part of why this is so gripping. Fascinating look into crime investigation, and all the messy parts of it too.

Enjoyable until the improvised carols at the end
Revisado: 01-03-18
I especially enjoyed Simon Callow’s reading. His is one of my most favorite voices as an actor, and what a lovely surprise to hear him narrate! I enjoyed Zipcode 12345 too. It brought a smile to my face. I could have done without the improved carols, truly. This would have been across the board 5 star reviews until the last segment started.

Positive and person-centered advice from an experience professional
Revisado: 04-15-16
So much good stuff here. I particularly appreciated his emphasis on behavior as communication, not as something to eliminate. (What are they trying to say with their actions?) As a parent of a teenager with autism, I think treatments can get very caught up in "fixing" our loved ones. What if we concentrate on helping build a happy life for them, creating positive experiences out in the world, and feeding them spiritually? Isn't that what we all want? Isn't that what human beings want? Loved the book.

Historia
Sandra Worth's Crown of Destiny, her second novel in a trilogy about Richard III, picks up shortly after the first book's conclusion, with Richard finally wed and attempting to safeguard his new family from the machinations of his brother Edward IV's court. This is a fast listen, but one that never lags. Richard grows in this unusual portrayal of a humane man in an inhumane time, one who must confront challenging choices that threaten to rend his world apart, and contend with the own darkness in his own nature.

Revisado: 07-26-15
I am enjoying this re telling of history from Richard's perspective and with this particular slant. I know history portrays Richard as the ultimate villain, but I always enjoy hearing these stories from the "what if..." perspective. Great performance, wonderful story to ponder.
