Historia
Dellarobia Turnbow is a restless farm wife who gave up her own plans when she accidentally became pregnant at 17. Now, after a decade of domestic disharmony on a failing farm, she encounters a shocking sight: a silent, forested valley filled with what looks like a lake of fire. She can only understand it as a cautionary miracle, but it sparks a raft of other explanations from scientists, religious leaders, and the media.

The really bad and inconsistent accents of anyone who wasn't from Tennessee; was sad to realize it was the author reading them so poorly.

Historia
In his first novel to follow the publication of his enormous success, The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck's vision comes wonderfully to life in this imaginative and unsentimental chronicle of a bus traveling California's back roads, transporting the lost and the lonely, the good and the greedy, the stupid and the scheming, the beautiful and the vicious away from their shattered dreams and, possibly, toward the promise of the future. This edition features an introduction by Gary Scharnhorst.

Forlorn ambience
Revisado: 11-26-24
Great story. I generally liked the reader's voice, but found his voicing of the women quite disagreeable, with whiny and or breathy tones for the "problematic" females. It's so much better when a voice in the story is just the voice of the reader; the writing, when good, gives body to the character's speech.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Stressful situations

The reader's voice is wonderful. The story's characters are wonderfully multi-dimensional. Some rough patches described, like life.

Not what I had expected
Revisado: 09-02-24
I was expecting more about grifters and cons, not criminals and 2 people who buck standard norms yet (surprising to the author, it seems) find success in their fields. These "rogues" are already well known and publicized. I loved Say Nothing because it revealed details that I didn't know. This book covers people that are overly exposed already. The writing and research is good, but most of the subjects were not compelling to me.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Excellent performance
Revisado: 08-25-24
The performance was very good, with the reader adeptly voicing the different characters believably. The story was surprisingly stupidly dark for me, and triggering, with overwrought debaucheries and angstiness. I liked the premise anyway and loved the artisan mentor Hobie and all the scenes with him.

Unforgettable
Revisado: 12-30-23
Heartbreaking story of spirit-breaking times, wrotten in the midst of it, in 1946. Am grateful for Ann Petry's writing, and that we have a recording of this book. I liked how the story unfolds from different points of view. The reader was excellent at bringing the different characters' voices to life, differentiating the people, without overdoing it. I look forward to hearing more readings by her.

Painful story, well told
Revisado: 11-08-22
I had never read this. Laverne Cox reading it was the best way to take this pill of a story of the golden age of patriarchal exploitation of women by men in you-name-it-industries. The author captured the times well, it seems. I love Cox's natural voice but some of the voices she does for the characters were grating. I will look for other narrations by her, in the hopes that either her director is better or she gets some good character voice coaching.

A harrowing story that follows the wanderings of a boy abandoned by his parents during World War II, The Painted Bird is a dark masterpiece that examines the proximity of terror and savagery to innocence and love. It is the first, and the most famous, novel by one of the most important and original writers of this century.

not for the faint of heart
Revisado: 05-10-22
wonderfully perfect narrator. dispassionate reading, which at first troubled me, but as the story unfolded, and especially after hearing the afterword, makes sense absolutely. the story itself was hard to process (human brutality) but the storytelling is artful. am rating the story just 3 stars because it was not a pleasurable tale, but it was well written.

Historia
Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.
Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands.

over-acted and unengaging
Revisado: 12-13-21
The vocal dynamics of this reader are over the top. It sounds like half the text was written in all caps. I have seen the book, but if all caps are pervasive, the reader did a good job. My volume buttons got too much use over the course of this book. No likeable people amongst the characters.

okay
Revisado: 11-21-21
Not the story I had hoped for, but entertaining anyway. I was reminded of how I don't really like readers trying to create characters' voices, or maybe just how Ballerini does it. The other 2 readers were great. Will be looking to hear more from Graham.
