Historia
Few figures in American politics have seen more and said less than Mitt Romney. An outspoken dissident in Donald Trump’s GOP, he has made headlines in recent years for standing alone against the forces he believes are poisoning the party he once led. Romney was the first senator in history to vote to remove from office a president of his own party. When that president’s supporters went on to storm the US Capitol, Romney delivered a thundering speech from the Senate floor accusing his fellow Republicans of stoking insurrection.

A true statesman
Revisado: 01-30-24
Incredible book that only increased my admiration for Senator Romney. He sees through all of the pandering and hypocrisy that is so rampant in today’s GOP. It saddens me that he has chosen to withdraw from the arena when thoughtful leaders like him are exactly what we need at this time.

Fantastic new series from Adrian Tchaikovsky. Such rich concepts that reminds me of the best of Hamilton. Having first read his “Children of Time” this is a great series as well.

Historia
It’s been 120 years since the 50 or so worldships containing the few million survivors of the human species set off after the planet Earth was destroyed by a meteor. On the Worldship Humility, Sam, a 30-year-old Airlock Operative, is bored. Living in space should be exciting and full of adventure, except it isn’t, and he fills his time hacking 3-D movie posters and holographic adverts outside the stores in the retail zone. Petty thief Yasmine Emile Dufont is also from the WS Humility, but she is not bored....

I really wanted to like this book and despite wanting to give up several times, stayed to the end. Silly dialogue that prides itself on profanity (and I’m not averse to that) but it all just seemed so implausible that I’m glad it’s over. Not going to purchase the next books as there are so many other worthy uses of my driving time.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Mediocre listen
Revisado: 08-04-21
Had high hopes for this as The Martian is one of my favs but like Artemis, this didn’t live up to that standard. Narration tried to be funny and hip but was mainly annoying. I did like the concept of 2 completely unrelated species working together but I hoped that it would be scientifically at least somewhat plausible but that isn’t the case here.

On the night she meets Jonathan Alkaitis, a hooded figure scrawls a message on the lobby's glass wall: Why don’t you swallow broken glass. Station11 is one of my favorite books ever. While this wasn’t at the same pace, the story she created is amazing. Her ability to weave these complex stories is unequaled in current literature.

The Earth lies in ruins in the aftermath of an extraterrestrial invasion, the land devastated by a desperate war with no winners between mankind and a race of vicious, intelligent creatures. The seas are drying up while the atmosphere corrodes and slowly cooks any life remaining on the now desolate rock. Food is scarce, trust even more so, and the only people left alive all have done horrific things to stay that way.

Didn't expect a lot from this Audible free listen and really enjoyed the concept and characters. Teaming up with an alien who's species just destroyed earth wasn't something I thought would work but it was a fun listen. Actually stopped listening to "Heavens River" Bobiverse book since I wasn't enjoying and this was refreshing and new. We'll see how the rest of the trilogy is!

From two former military officers and award-winning authors comes a chillingly authentic geopolitical thriller that imagines a naval clash between the US and China in the South China Sea in 2034 - and the path from there to a nightmarish global conflagration.

Good premise, poor execution
Revisado: 03-31-21
I enjoyed the first part of the book as it envisioned a 2030s conflict between the US and China. Considering the background of the authors I expected it to be somewhat plausible. Instead it became a silly stretch and I had to just resign myself to finishing it off.

Historia
Hig survived the flu that killed everyone he knows. His wife is gone, his friends are dead, he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, his only neighbor a gun-toting misanthrope. In his 1956 Cessna, Hig flies the perimeter of the airfield or sneaks off to the mountains to fish and to pretend that things are the way they used to be. But when a random transmission somehow beams through his radio, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists beyond the airport.

Really enjoy the premise of this book. Man post pandemic, recreational pilot hangs with a solid military bro to defend their territory for many years. Pilot leaves and happens to fly over a pretty woman? Silly from then on and I think that this post-apocalypse future is too dark. Station 11 is a better book and more “real” in my eyes.

Historia
The 2016 election was a watershed for the United States. But, as Tim Alberta explains in American Carnage, to understand Trump’s victory is to view him not as the creator of this era of polarization and bruising partisanship, but rather as its most manifest consequence. American Carnage is the story of a president’s rise based on a country’s evolution and a party’s collapse. As George W. Bush left office with record-low approval ratings and Barack Obama led a Democratic takeover of Washington, Republicans faced a moment of reckoning.

Incredible book written by a “conservative” insider that details how Trump and his cronies destroyed the Republican Party. Just hope that we Americans see through Trumps facade and end this before he takes down the entire nation.
