Historia
In 1890 twelve guests gather at Desborough Hall for a week’s shooting party hosted by the beautiful Lady Amelia Hammond. Months of planning have left nothing to chance, for the main guests are the Prince and Princess of Wales. But events take a sinister turn when the vivacious Queenie Chimes collapses face down in the chef’s lovingly created bombe-glacée. More deaths follow and clues planted on the bodies point shockingly to a final tally of seven, one for each day of the week. Bertie is impelled to investigate.

Excellent narration. Overlong story but nice ‘Cozy, period’ piece. Very ‘English’. Of necessity a little repetitive.

Historia
The death of a TV reporter from a single bullet wound to the heart is a dramatic news story, and also an unsolved crime. But the twist in the tale is that this time it's the man who fired the bullet who's asking all the questions. Michael Watson wants to know how come the police were on his tail so quickly. And who wanted the journalist permanently out of the picture? His first task is to find the writer of his pay cheque; the second is to make sure he doesn't get caught.

Unworthy of publication
Revisado: 03-30-23
Plot is overcomplicated and derivative. Characters unconvincing plot and rational needs more work. Presentation is ok but limited by the material. This is a pity as. Rankin is. and good well known novelist.
Perhaps this an early work.

Philosophy most profound
Revisado: 01-30-16
The Travis McGee series are ridiculous. Ridiculously good & entertaining. John D was a great and prolific author. Trav provides a model of how a life should be lived though I have found it rather tiring.

Historia
Havana Nocturne takes listeners back to Cuba in the years when it was a veritable devil's playground for mob leaders Meyer Lansky and Charles "Lucky" Luciano. Thanks to strong ties with the island's brutal dictator, President Batista, the mob soon owned the biggest luxury hotels and casinos and launched an unprecedented tourist boom. But their dreams collided with those of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and others.

A good example of how greed, sleaze and criminality can defeated but not in the USA. No lessons were learned.
