Good but Not as Good as His Previous Work

I love Steven Pressfield and so much of his work. Unfortunately, to me, this felt like “Turning Pro with Different Terms”. If you have not read them, get War for Art and Turning Pro. IMHO those works were much better than this one and I’ll likely reread them many times but not come back to this one. I still love you and your work, Steve. This one just didn’t hit the mark for me. 😉

Excellent for Beginner to Advanced

Author Minette Norman does an excellent job delivering structure and insights for everyone in the DEIA development spectrum: from beginner to advanced. Some of my key takeaways included....

1. Emotions are Data: Business leaders often reflect poorly on emotions. Why? We love data everywhere else. We should recognize emotions as another excellent point of data.

2. Great Minds Do NOT Think Alike: We've all heard and likely used the expression, "Great minds think alike". It's wrong. If your group all thinks alike, you're in danger of group think. It's a warning sign you need greater diversity of thought.

3. Meetings Reveal Culture: How people behave - and are permitted to behave - in your team meetings, reveals the culture of your organization.

DEI&A is a part of what I teach and train on a regular basis. I still found many original and useful insights in this book while also recognizing it as a fantastic starting point for leaders who are earlier on their journey down this crucial path. If you're debating whether to buy a copy, do it now - you won't regret it.

If you struggle with employee engagement levels, high turnover, or inconsistent results, The Great Game of Business might be the tool and method you need. I’d also suggest investigating servant-leadership books and concepts. The two pair very well!

This is my first exposure to AJ’s work, and I am a fan!As a self-published author who takes my work very seriously and invested far more than most self-published projects out there, I wanted to level up my game even more. This book was exactly what I needed. Thanks, AJ!

Content is Okay, Readers Voice & Pace is Odd to me

Listen to the sample. Maybe it’s just me but I find this one very hard to listen to. As for the content, there are several chapters about copy writing work, roles, and approaches. If you buy a book on HOW to write copy, I think you’re interested in that and already have the basic understanding.

So I’m not a fan of this one. I’m sure there is a good audience for it somewhere but it’s not what I expected based on the title, subtitle, and description. Okay hey mixed with an off performance has me unhappy with this purchase. I couldn’t finish it.

Should be Mandatory Reading for All Old White Guys

Revisado: 03-01-20

This should be Mandatory Reading for every old white guy in an executive office - myself and friends included. Her candor, transparency, and nonconfrontational manner disarm the biggest skeptics.

In the same light of her own vulnerability, I will point out Sandberg makes some of the same mistakes she confronts in the book. The biggest example is when she writes, "last time I checked, there were no affirmative action laws (that helped her)." In this statement, Sandberg implies minorities are getting some help she is not and therefore minimizes their plight. Any reader will see this is definitely not her intent. Yet it serves as a great example we all still have much to learn.

An often overlooked audience that will benefit greatly is any parent who struggles with work-life "balance" (I use the term and approach of "alignment", instead). However, I will say it again, this should be mandatory reading for us privileged, old, white dudes. Thank you, Sheryl & Elisa.
