Excellently written, wonderfully read
Revisado: 04-25-24
I was delighted to see that GxK had a novelization. I love reading them after I see a movie because they fill in so much background and so many details that have to be edited from the film. This one was a delight, and will add an extra layer of enjoyment every time I rewatch the movie.

Historia
Librarian Sylvia Ashe knows nothing about her past, having grown up without a father and a mother who refused to discuss him. When she stumbles upon a diary that suggests she's descended from magicians, she's skeptical. After all, magicians are special, and she's just an ordinary woman who loves books. She seeks answers from a member of the most prominent family of magicians, but she quickly learns that finding the truth won't be easy, especially when he turns out to be as artless as her, and more compelling and dangerous than books.

Well crafted mystery
Revisado: 02-08-24
Good use of the historical setting. Engaging characters, except Willie, who needs to be dropped down a well. I'm looking forward to the next book and learning more about these people and their magic. The narrator did a fine job giving each character a distinct voice.

I've enjoyed this entire series very much. The writing is first class and the heroines Gwen and Iris are intelligent, interesting, engaging wonen. Post war London is brilliantly brought to life in details large and small.

Historia
Felicia, Lizbeth Rose’s younger half-sister and student at the Grigori school within the capital of the New Holy Russian Empire in San Diego, is caught between secrets and powerful family struggles. As a distant relative to the Tsar, she provides an essential service to him by providing blood transfusions for his hemophilia, and she is thus given rare access and dismissed as if cattle. At the Grigori school she is seen as a charity case, a poor orphan with no prospects and no sign of magical prowess—the latter which Felicia keeps purposefully hidden.

Revisado: 02-04-23
I love this series and I very much enjoyed this book. I wasn't sure at first about the switch from Gunnie Rose to Felicia but It was fun seeing Felicia develop from an obnoxious little girl to a strong and intelligent young woman. The other characters are varied and interesting and their world continues to fascinate me.
Eva Kaminsky did another remarkable job! Everything about her voice and her ability to make so many characters distinct and identifiable added to my enjoyment. I hope there are more books in the Gunnie Rose universe.

Historia
The London Silver Vaults—for well over a century, the largest collection of silver for sale in the world. It has more locks than the Bank of England and more cameras than a paparazzi convention. Not somewhere you can murder someone and vanish without a trace—only that’s what happened. The disappearing act, the reports of a blinding flash of light, and memory loss amongst the witnesses all make this a case for Detective Constable Peter Grant and the Special Assessment Unit.

Author and narrator are perfectly matched
Revisado: 04-20-22
I've already expressed my admiration for Ben Aaronovitch in reviews for previous books in this series, so let's talk about the narrator, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. His voice is so smooth and rich that it's a pure pleasure just to hear the sound of it. I'm in awe of his ability to give each character a distinct sound. Peter's dry wit and Nightingale's upper class sang froid are both absolutely perfect and I'm constantly amazed that they're voiced by the same man. And as always, now that I've finished this latest entry I'll immediately go back to the beginning and spend the next several days replaying the previous books.

Revisado: 03-05-22
If I see a Charlaine Harris book that I don't already have, I grab it without hesitation. Honestly, I don't even need to check the back cover. If she wrote it, I know it'll be a great read. Also, Eva Kaminsky is the perfect voice for Gunny Rose.

Revisado: 10-24-21
The characters are well drawn and compelling. The snappy dialogue is delightful. The storytelling is superb and the mystery in each book is twisty and satisfying. The vivid depiction of London and its people just after World War II is deeply pleasing to this history nerd.
