Historia
When Works Progress Administration editor Millie Lang finds herself on the wrong end of a potential political scandal, she’s shipped off to Montana to work on the state’s American Guide Series—travel books intended to put the nation’s destitute writers to work. Millie arrives to an eclectic staff claiming their missed deadlines are due to sabotage, possibly from the state’s powerful Copper Kings who don’t want their long and bloody history with union organizers aired. But Millie begins to suspect that the answer might instead lie with the town’s mysterious librarian, Alice Monroe.

Great story and great narration.
Revisado: 03-24-25
I loved this story and it had a twist that I wasn’t expecting. The only thing I didn’t like was that it went back and forth in time which was a little confusing, but the storyline was very good. The characters were strong independent women and I really liked that. I will definitely look for more books by this author.

Different Story Line
Revisado: 02-03-25
Good book. Although, I thought it was a little drawn out. It was good to listen to a book with a new story line that I’ve never read before.

Excellent book
Revisado: 12-07-24
This book was a quick read. I was enthralled by Kat and Mara’s lives and friendship. I’m so glad that they are such both strong women who are able love and support each other through the good and the bad times. I loved how the reader got to hear both of their perspectives. I would definitely recommend this book.

What an amazing book about love and family. I wish more people were animal lovers and would give back half as much love as the author to her animals.

Historia
We live in a place everyone calls paradise. Sure, Kauai’s beautiful, with empty beaches, drip-castle mountains, and perfect surf...but we’ve been "camping" for six months, eating boiled chicken feed for breakfast, and wearing camouflage clothes so no one sees us trespassing in our jungle hideout. The cockroaches leave rainbow colors all over everything from eating the crayons we left outside the tent, and now a tractor is coming to scrape our camp into the river. Standing in front of the tent in my nightgown, I know my own truth: I just want to be normal.

Narrator was terrible
Revisado: 05-24-23
I enjoyed this book and the story, but unfortunately, I did not finish it because the narration was so terrible. The narrator took a breath or said ugh before every sentence and the parts where she screamed and whined were very annoying. Next time, I will be sure to listen to the sample first.

Too long to make a point
Revisado: 02-06-22
The author could have saved the reader a lot of time by just making the point about divorce in the beginning. The story was very drawn out and tiresome.

On an isolated Texas ranch, Dr. Lucy cares for abandoned animals. The solitude allows her to avoid the people and places that remind her of the past. Not that any of the townsfolk care. In 1959, no one is interested in a woman doctor. Nor are they welcoming Calvin and Justin Bell, a newly arrived African American father and son.

Great Book - Narrator Not So Great
Revisado: 04-13-21
The book and the story line was good. I have loved all of the Catherine Ryan Hyde books I have read. I did not enjoy the male narrator. His female voice was terrible. If you are going to have a male and a female narrator, they should each read for the appropriate sex. It would have sounded better if they just had one person that read all parts because the accents were off with two readers.

Good Book-Annoying Voice
Revisado: 05-25-19
I really liked this book and the story, but one of the readers sounded like Marge Simpson and she also ended every sentence in a question. I would have enjoyed it a lot more with a different voice.

Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom.
