Would Make a Great Show
Revisado: 10-31-24
This series is excellent. Vivid, interesting world and a growing meta mystery surrounding each episode. Hope it gets picked up by some studio or another - feels like it could be done similarly to Altered Carbon on Netflix.

Historia
Johnnie Rico never really intended to join up—and definitely not the infantry. But now that he’s in the thick of it, trying to get through combat training harder than anything he could have imagined, he knows everyone in his unit is one bad move away from buying the farm in the interstellar war the Terran Federation is waging against the Arachnids. Because everyone in the Mobile Infantry fights. And if the training doesn’t kill you, the Bugs are more than ready to finish the job.

Great book to revisit after so many years. RC Bray is perfectly cast for the narration and does a superb job for each character. Well worth a credit.

Historia
Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son, Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

Fascinating
Revisado: 10-25-24
I’m not a big reader of histories but this was riveting and fascinating. It’s good to see the other side of the fantasy of Native American perfection prior to the arrival of whites, and doubly so to follow the story of such an extraordinary person such as Quanah Parker. Excellent.

Historia
This is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world - and did. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he fight his hardest battle not against his enemies, but against the woman he loves? Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus and launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon.

Historia
Reidon Ward's first semester at the Galens Institute hasn't been without reward. In just over half a year he's gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class, and there's no one left who would argue that his Device, Shido, isn't the most terrifying CAD they've ever laid eyes on. Still, Rei knows that his climb has barely begun, like he knows that the true fight is only just starting. After all… The Sectionals tournament has arrived. Rei, along with Aria, Viv, Catcher, and a couple unexpected squadmates, are about to face the first real battle of their careers.

Disappointing But Not Series Ruining
Revisado: 07-03-24
I still have 5 hours left, and nothing has happened. They go to sectionals and compete. There’s some lame attempt to make a REALLY GOOD thing sound sinister, some hints at a larger threat, but nothing moves forward.
Ray gets stronger. That’s the summary.
Incidentals include Viv becoming insufferable, endless hemming and hawing over trauma dumps (Grant’s backstory - yawn).
POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW
I can’t help but also feel like the author’s politics are on display and it feels forced.
Every female character is an absolute Girl Boss who out man’s every man in every situation imaginable and the men love them for it.
There’s an entire section - hours of audio - devoted to an event that seems to be about either PTSD or is a metaphor for rape or both. But it falls flat because the characters literally simulate their own deaths day after day in SCT fights- THEY PASS OUT AND EXPERIENCE EXCRUCIATING PAIN AND THE ARENA SAYS FATAL DAMAGE ACRUED ON THE DAILY - so when Ray gets all traumatic about an unexpected simulated death (after going through it dozens of times PER DAY when he’s training, especially against the Lasher) it’s like, seriously?
And then Aria gets her own dose because she saw Ray get it not so good? And Dent, the toughest of the tough is just like “hey I had my face blown off once but you just went through the same shit you go through day after day WE SHOULD ALL CROWD AROUND AND CODDLE AND CRY WITH YOU!” And everybody does, including the whole arena cheering for Aria overcoming literally nothing. NOTHING HAPPENED TO HER! And her friend was fine!
Ugh. Five more hours. I skipped the last 20 minutes of Viv explaining Grants back story because Grant is too much of a crybaby to do it himself. I get it. It’s a tough story for him and Girl Boss Viv needed to prove she’s emotionally stronger than he is because obviously tough men are forced by the patriarchy to not be able to express feelings.
Also, Cash has two dads. Ok?
And there’s there’s a hyper competent transwoman whose only function is to be described as super hot, super competent, and then who literally makes the scene about himself because he was born a man and thinks he’s a woman now and thinks that’s important and pertinent to explain to his boss.
Redeeming moment when the boss says something like “that’s not at all similar to what’s going on.” Based. But we’re supposed to hate that guy because he offers the greatest thing possible to Ray.
Obviously I struggled with this one. Just tell a story. I believe the women can be strong, they have CADs, they don’t need to immasculate every male character for me to remember that.

Best one in the recent bunch
Revisado: 01-30-24
This installment takes things in a fresh direction. Where usually there is some preamble then the remainder of the book takes place on whatever world Legion Varus goes to, this one actually expands on the greater universe, meta conflict with the galactic races, and internal politics of earth.
Glad to see the series staying fresh!

I'll keep reading but I'm not happy about it
Revisado: 11-12-23
I really enjoyed book 1, but the title of book 2 contains literally the entirety of what happens in this book. There's some random check-ins with some other characters, who have fights that have no stakes or reason, but the only plot moving point happens halfway through and then the rest is just fluff.
I don't know what the broader conflict or threat is, which makes me worried the story will run out of steam while the writer scrambles to figure out where to go with it. I'll try book 3, but it needs to improve on this one for me to continue.

Historia
Monsters and beasts roamed the earth and were slain by soldiers and adventurers who were, in turn, killed by stronger threats. Heroes and villains created new epics and were forgotten when their successors appeared. This was the way of the Infinite World. Summoned into this chaotic place, a young boy with no name and no past must learn to survive. Bound to a master who doesn't care whether he lives or dies, he must become stronger. The question is: how?

Solid - Lots of Potential
Revisado: 11-11-23
Narrator, concept, story, and world are all quite good. The only thing that holds this one back (and I've grown used to it) is the omniscient viewpoint that skips around from perspective to perspective. It's a bit distracting and if you lose focus for a moment you can suddenly be looking through somebody else's eyes. The author does a good job of sign posting this, so it's not a deal breaker.
Also Tersa. She's the worst. I'm 90% through book 2 and she is still the worst.

Historia
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.
