The story and characters of another world in a distant time are rich and deep. The performance is truly out of this world. It's been a long time since I enjoyed an audiobook as much as this one.

In the midst of tense drama and relatable, real characters I prize the genuine laugh out loud exchanges peppered throughout. Adrian McKinty's Sean Duffy is another series of this type- fabulous!

Bittersweet wartime compassion

An often stunning story of opposing WWII pilots, expertly told and masterfully read. Interesting to note that many Germans were never Nazis, and fully more than 60% of German 1933 voters rejected Hitler, in spite of powerful Brown Shirt intimidation, in the final election before such freedoms were abolished.

Too much of a good thing.

It's a good story and good narration, but a little too much of both. The tale stretches on and on sometimes, losing impact and focus through sheer volume. The narrator is capable of great performance as well, but he, too, over plays his hand. I'm repeatedly reminded of William Shatner when Star Trek scenes amped up. To be fair to Mr. Hill, his nuance is far beyond any on the Enterprise.

This author should NOT narrate, ugh!!!

Great story, amazing research, well-written. The downfall of this production, however, is that the author narrates the first and last major sections of the book. What possessed Carol Leonnig to believe she should narrate ANY of this audiobook confounds and disappoints me. Her pace, her tone- she's by far the worst narrator I've heard in listening to hundreds of audiobooks over decades. The endless Author's Note and Prologue (narrated by Leonnig) were excruciating, but there was hope in that another narrator would take it from there.

The following chapters (Maggi-Meg Reed) were fascinating, captivating, and very well narrated.

Now I've just arrived at "The Trump Years, " narrated again by Leonnig, and I honestly don't know if I can make it through to the end listening to this awful voice. My God, what a disappointing situation. I feel as if I'm being held hostage by an author's vanity, forcing me to suffer through this in order to learn the details of the climactic story. Very, very disappointing.
