Didn’t do it for me
Revisado: 08-13-24
Maybe BookTok hyped up my expectation, as everyone raved about this, but I didn’t love it. It was ok. I won’t be reading the 2nd anytime soon.
The Magic System: Yes, this is neat. Best part or the book but I felt that I wanted more background and explanation on it.
The Main Characters: I just found them… boring. They lacked witty banter and tension that I like in my romantasies.
Writing: Well written. Descriptions easy to form a picture in my mind. However, lacking feeling, IMHO.

It’s true when they say that this book has Hunger Games meets Vampires vibes. It was well written; saucy banter, dark, intriguing, touch of spice, drama, intensity and plot twists. The 2nd one concludes this story so well.

I couldn’t get past listening to the first 20 minutes due to the female narrator. She was so dramatically wimpy and woeful. Don’t get me wrong, her voice would suit nicely in a different genre. And maybe it’s just my own expectations but I am guessing the main character is supposed to be a strong tough cookie, not a simpering, breathy, brittle leaf. And I didn’t even get to the male narration, which is not getting any better reviews.
I heard that this series had ACOTAR feels (and I’m desperately looking for Sarah J Maas vibes after reading all of her) and I did not want to continue and dislike a perfectly good series due to narration.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Good, but not great (IMHO)
Revisado: 08-13-24
I wanted to love this book. I started out loving it as it is wonderfully written. I love the premise, the suspense, the detail. I loved how it was based on a true story, learning about life as a midwife at that time, as I am a nurse myself. I loved getting to know the characters and the hardships they went through.
But something was missing; it stopped being compelling. It dragged on a bit after the first half and I felt like I wanted to race to the end to find out what happened. When I got there, it fell flat for me. But that’s just my humble opinion! Many people have clearly loved this book so I do encourage you to read it.

Historia
Dr. Briana Ortiz’s life is seriously flatlining. Her divorce is just about finalized, her brother’s running out of time to find a kidney donor, and that promotion she wants? Oh, that’s probably going to the new man-doctor who’s already registering eighty-friggin’-seven on Briana’s “pain in my ass” scale. But just when all systems are set to hate, Dr. Jacob Maddox completely flips the game . . . by sending Briana a letter. And it’s a really good letter. Like the kind that proves that Jacob isn’t actually Satan.

All the feels
Revisado: 08-13-24
I loved this book and the narrators. Finished listening in 3 days. This was my first time reading Abby Jimenez and I will be back!
The story: All the feels. Funny (so much!) endearing, tugged at heart strings, happy, sad, heartbroken, hopeful.
The writing: Very well done, relatable in an easy yet engaging way.
The narrators: LOVE the narrators, especially the voice for Jacob. He matched the character so well and I was crushing.

3.5
Revisado: 08-13-24
There was a lot I liked about this book, such as the layers of the main character and her struggle to move forward; first after a tragedy and then after her life as a wife and mother is upended. Other characters were interesting and heartbreaking as well. The mystery had me guessing to the end, but it didn’t wow or floor me, personally. If there was a 3.5, that’s what I’d rate.

Historia
They say you can never go home again, and for Persephone Fraser, ever since she made the biggest mistake of her life a decade ago, that has felt too true. Instead of spending summers in cottage country, on the glittering lakeshore of her childhood, she stays in a stylish apartment in Toronto, keeping everyone a safe distance from her heart. Until Percy receives the call that sends her racing back to Barry’s Bay and into the orbit of Sam Florek—the man she never thought she’d have to live without.

Good Summer Read
Revisado: 08-13-24
The story and the characters were sweet and cute and had a good amount of tension and spice. A few events that I wish had more weight written into it, dynamics that I wish had more impact. Overall, a good summer read.

Historia
One afternoon at an outdoor market in India, a man’s shadow disappears - an occurrence science cannot explain. He is only the first. The phenomenon spreads like a plague, and while those afflicted gain a strange new power, it comes at a horrible price: the loss of all their memories. Ory and his wife, Max, have escaped the Forgetting so far by hiding in an abandoned hotel deep in the woods. Their new life feels almost normal, until one day, Max’s shadow disappears, too.

Hmmmm
Revisado: 11-27-23
Liked: the idea of the story and the writing was well done. Character development was good. Strong start. I liked the end purpose/mission.
Disliked: I wanted to understand the shadowless more, including their powers. There were descriptions but no reason to why and how. Some had more power than others. Also, I found that it dragged in the middle. I found myself tuning out. I’m not a fan of the female narration. It was too dramatic. By the end, it fell flat for me. The big twist was not as impactful, by this time I just wanted to finish and move on.

It’s ok
Revisado: 07-30-22
What I liked: the twists to the story. I did not predicts many of the little secrets that unfolded as the story went on.
What I didn’t like: overall, I just didn’t find this story compelling. It was fine but when I compare it to The Wife Between Us (which, in my opinion, was incredibly done), this one seemed lacklustre.

Historia
Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she's struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Against the sweeping backdrop of a world seared by war and plagued with uncertainty, Nesta and Cassian battle monsters from within and without as they search for acceptance - and healing - in each other's arms.

Not as good as the first 3 in my opinion, but better than Frost and Starlight. Seemed slow paced (when Nesta was the most annoying) and then ended quickly. I’m glad that Cassian and Nesta got their story and it all ended well.
