Fearfully and Wonderfully Made takes listeners through their own bodies, delving into the molecular and even the quantum, and tells the story of our magnificent sensorium and what it means for the next wave of human potential. From the laboratories to the ordinary homes where these breakthroughs are taking place, the book explores our current sensory Renaissance and shows listeners how they, themselves, can heighten their own senses and experience the miraculous.

Pretentious

The author's intension is clearly to report and boast about her own abilities and travels rather than approach this book with an intension to be helpful, instructive, or even interesting to the reader.

Historia
Fumio Sasaki is not an enlightened minimalism expert or organizing guru like Marie Kondo - he's just a regular guy who was stressed out and constantly comparing himself to others, until one day he decided to change his life by saying goodbye to everything he didn't absolutely need. The effects were remarkable: Sasaki gained true freedom, new focus, and a real sense of gratitude for everything around him.

More memoir than helpful
Revisado: 06-12-23
He made one point that I will take with me: If you lost this possession, would you buy it again?
Otherwise, his advice is based largely on past personal insecurities. He collected all his belongings to impress others, he says. And much of the text that follows is declarations on how this is useless. But if that is not the reader's reasons, there isn't much to this. The author uses the same towel for dishes, cleaning house, and to dry off after bathing.
No. No, thank you. This book, in short, does not spark joy.
Good reader.

Refreshing to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly. I thought I had heard it all but there are some surprises in here. Really enjoyable listen. Would even listen again.

Disappointed in the stories and cheap shots.
Revisado: 11-03-22
I went in rooting for him. Coming from a family of addicts, I thought I'd find relatable stories, and maybe a little help if not compassion- both for him or from him. There is very little of any of this. And very little humor. I'm most disappointed in the random cheap shots he makes at Reeves and Bierko. Frankly he comes off as a jerk. I preordered and began listening at midnight on the release date. That's how much I was anticipating this book. A few days later and I am still 2 hours from the end. I'm so uninvested I might not finish. The ratings are from how much people love him. I don't think it's about the quality of this writing. Still rooting for him, but you don't need the book to do so. In fact, the feeling would be better fostered if you miss it.

Historia
Greg Mortenson has built a global reputation as a selfless humanitarian and children's crusader, and he's been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He is also not what he appears to be. As acclaimed author Jon Krakauer discovered, Mortenson has not only fabricated substantial parts of his bestselling books, but has also misused millions of dollars donated by unsuspecting admirers like Krakauer himself. This is the tragic tale of good intentions gone very wrong.

Fan of Krakauer, but not this.
Revisado: 05-22-21
I bought this because there has not been a book JK has written that I have not loved. This is written well, which is to be expected, but it sounds like Krakauer has a score to settle. Rightfully so, being one of the unsuspecting supporters of Mortenson's poorly managed project, I just think we should not be expected to pay for this. Put it out there, sure, but this feels like it was written to exonerate the author from his association. It was not written for the reader.

Historia
One typical Friday morning in February 1997, two masked men dressed in body armor and carrying automatic rifles burst into the Bank of America in North Hollywood, California and started shooting. They forced customers to the ground, stuffed hundreds of thousands of dollars into a duffel bag and exited out the back…where they were surrounded by police. For the next 44 minutes, the armed robbers and police engaged in a deadly gunfight.

Historia
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

If you already know her, and you like her, you will LOVE this. It's a love story, a self-discovery journey, an advice column, an inspirational speech- delivered with the warmth, sensitivity, honesty and humor I've come to expect from Glennon's writings.
I'm so happy I have the audible version because I get to hear all the inflections first-hand; but owning the book might also be a necessity for all the lines I want to go back and highlight to reference and share.
I'm so touched by all the Mary Oliver references (I miss her too, Glennon).
Forgive me. I don't know her, but I have to call her Glennon. I just spent 8 hours with her and she feels like a friend.
You'll feel this way, too, when you finish Untamed.

Historia
Dame Sue Black is an internationally renowned forensic anthropologist and human anatomist. She has lived her life eye to eye with the Grim Reaper, and she writes vividly about it in this book, which is part primer on the basics of identifying human remains, part frank memoir of a woman whose first paying job as a schoolgirl was to apprentice in a butcher shop, and part no-nonsense but deeply humane introduction to the reality of death in our lives. It is a treat for CSI junkies, murder mystery and thriller fans, and anyone seeking a clear-eyed guide to a subject that touches us all.

Misleading description
Revisado: 12-19-19
I'm over two hours in and find this book to be much more of a personal history and self-analysis about facing her first cadaver and dealing with the death of her relatives than it is about science or crime solving. I was in it for the science and crime solving, so it falls flat. I find myself tuning in and out and not pausing it when I leave the room.

Historia
Alone with her new husband on a tiny Pacific atoll, a young woman, combing the beach, finds an odd aluminum container washed up out of the lagoon, and beside it on the sand something glitters: a gold tooth in a scorched human skull. The investigation that follows uncovers an extraordinarily complex and puzzling true-crime story. Only Vincent Bugliosi, who recounted his successful prosecution of mass murderer Charles Manson in the best seller Helter Skelter, was able to draw together the hundreds of conflicting details of the mystery and reconstruct what really happened....

Boring.
Revisado: 07-25-19
I'm 4 hours in and have stuck around hoping it would get better, giving the author the benefit of the doubt. But up to this point, nothing has happened except an excruciatingly dull description of novice sailers. Additionally irksome, it condescends in attitude, language, and performance to Muff, who could not have been the delicate submissive to accomplish the adventures she did.
I doubt I'll make it another hour before giving up on this. Disappointing given the success of Helter Skelter.

Officially a James Renner Fan
Revisado: 05-25-19
I don't know what it is about James Renner, but after two of his books I'd say I'm a fan. His style of writing and reading is slow and earnest. He doesn't take the popular angle of shock and drama. Instead his story telling is driven by curiosity and sincerity. The result is that I feel like I'm sitting across the table from a friend while he confides a deeply personal story. I felt this way about True Crime Addict, too. You care about him, the people in his story, and you wish your time together didn't have to draw to a close. He's a uniquely talented writer and reader. I'd love to hear more from him.
