Historia
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single woman in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a husband. Well, that's what her friends and relations say. But recently-widowed Octavia Darcy disagrees. She hasn't forgotten her impoverished girlhood. Now, when she unexpectedly finds herself an heiress, her ambition is to lead an independent life not to marry again.

Classic & Stylish Romance
Revisado: 01-26-10
Good old fashioned happy ending romance set in the Regency Period in England. Attitudes of the time are fascinating, especially from the perspective of how women weren't automatically able to inherit from their husbands, and weren't considered able to hold a political opinion, nor look after their own finances. Widowed Mrs Darcy finds herself in semi poverty when her husbands estate defaults to a distant male relative. But when she unexpectedly inherits from a wealthy aunt, society suddenly welcomes her into its bosom, in spite of the fact that she is an outspoken woman, with a mind of her own! The narrator reads all characters with zest, humour and elegance. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, listening to it almost in one sitting.

Rollicking Adventure
Revisado: 01-26-10
Phylida Nash is such a skilled reader who colours every character so brilliantly that it is a pleasure to listen to her.
This particular Georgette Heyer is a very funny adventure with a delightfully ditzy 'blonde', a young man learning to be bold and independent, without losing his gentle character, and a budding unexpected romance. I highly enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot and the calm saneness of the not so beautiful romantic heroine.

So Witty
Revisado: 10-05-09
I've never read this author, chose the book because I always love Phylidda Nash's narration.. she does voices so brilliantly.
But i fell in love with the author's writing as well. Such a dry humour, and a gorgeous leading heroine who has both sparkling dialogue and very funny asides. A totally enjoyable book to listen to.

Very funny
Revisado: 09-05-09
Another one of Georgette Heyers very funny novels, where the main story entertains through complicated twists and turns, and totally revels in the characters outwitting each other. Sian Phillips has been so superb in all of the Heyer novels i've listened to I can just relisten and re-enjoy. I just wish there were more read by her, June Barrie and Phylidda Nash, instead of by Eva Matheson (the only audible book i've had to dump off my ipod - unable to persevere listening after several attempts to get past the first few chapters)!

I laughed and laughed
Revisado: 09-05-09
This is just a delightful novel, the characters so endearingly funny and the plot twists and turns. I am in awe of Phillida Nash's skill in giving us so many distinct voices from young to older, french and english. She enhances and enlivens what is already a great tale.

It is in regrettable circumstances that beautiful Judith Taverner and her brother Peregrine first meet Julian St John Audley. The man, they both agree, is an insufferably arrogant dandy. But unfortunately for them, he's also the Fifth Earl of Worth, a friend of the Regent and, their legal guardian.

Fantastic Performance
Revisado: 09-05-09
June Barrie does a great rendition of the characters of this book. She as easily portrays the dry argumentative Lord Worth as she does the willful beautiful Judith. And the growing suspense is fabulous to listen to.

Brilliantly Acted with a Melodious Voice
Revisado: 09-05-09
I love all Georgette Heyer novels because her heroines are so sassy, smart and inspirational. But this novel went against all form for me with a heroine who was plain, and just wanted to be a good home maker. In spite of that Phylidda Nash is such a brilliant reader, drawing distinct characters with her voice that i just loved listening to the story, and grew to really appreciate the sentiment of a woman who knows her worth and is loved for being herself.

Historia
The Earl of Spenborough has always been noted for his eccentricity. Leaving a widow younger than his own daughter Serena is one thing, but quite another is leaving Serena's fortune to the trusteeship of the Marquis of Rotherham -- a man whom Serena once jilted and who now has the power to give or withhold his consent to any marriage she might contemplate. When Serena and her lovely young stepmother Fanny decide to move to Bath, Serena makes an odd new friend and discovers an old love, Major Hector Kirkby.

A 'shouty' read
Revisado: 08-06-09
I couldn't listen to this read of a fabulous novel. Eve Matheson has such a limited range that she really couldn't do anything with the male hero other than shout. I know that the male hero doesn't gain our sympathy until the end of the story, but we need to be able to listen to the beginning to be able to enjoy his transformation. A reader with more dexterity for Georgette Heyer is essential. Every other reader i've listened to (8 in total) has been so enjoyable.
