Spicy, exciting, fast-paced plot. It’s a short one that grips you from the outset and keeps you listening. Got me out of an audiobook funk, so now I’m going to listen to this author’s other stuff.

Narrator was good too!

The premise is cute. The story had potential, so I give that part the highest marks. The rest is no bueno. Narrator sounded bored (I don’t really blame her, I guess, but she could have helped things out a lot and maybe she just chose not to 🤷🏻‍♀️). The plot progression was choppy. The dialogue was cringe. The moral of the story could make hallmark circa 2015 seem progressive.

This honestly might be AI written. Or like a compilation from a high school AP creative writing class. It was just so dang flat.

Also, content warning, this story contains zero spice. But lots of “marriage and babies are the only things worth living for” propaganda. So, readers beware.

I’m obsessed with this series. I need book 3 and I need it now. There’s action, there’s love, there’s learning, there’s sadness, there’s humor, there’s a bit of spice. They are just perfection.

I’m binge listening to fairytale retellings (preferably with a bit of spice) and came across this one. One of the best so far. There were many different fairytales sort of woven together here, but it was done so artfully it didn’t feel forced or excessive. Only drawback for me was the male narrator, but he was still a solid 3/5 stars. He wasn’t awful or anything. I would have just preferred someone else.

Definitely worth the credit!

This was cute enough. Served it’s purpose for a long flight. The plot/story was fine. The writing wasn’t terrible, per se, but definitely not spectacular. The biggest irk for me was the unnecessary detail and over explanation that took me out of the moment occasionally. Like a weird jarring paragraph on how elevator access to penthouse suites work. Or the bizarre tangent about the MMC’s college job working in a cafeteria. It added nothing and took you out of the buzz of their first meeting/flirting. The editing could also have been better. Certain details were inconsistent from chapter to chapter. Christian Fox did a great job narrating on the male parts. The female narrator (Erin Mallon I think?) was awful. Her cadence was unnatural and her emotional inflection oscillated between nonexistent and whiny/cringy. If it’s free, recommend. If you have to pay, a paperback might be the way to go. Maybe the oddness of the writing at times is toned down if you’re not also dealing with the poor narration for the female portions. Spice level is 3/5

The story build and chemistry between characters was great. The male narrator was 5 stars. The female narrator…meh. Not terrible but I’ll think twice before I listen to another one she’s done.

Oh man, where to start. Annoying heroine. Hero is twice the heroine’s age. Hero started out pretty good but progressively got worse. Hero and heroine slap each other around a bit. Two flat characters that apparently make each other worse. Just don’t.

I don’t know why I keep listening. The first half of the first book of this series was so dang good. And the second book was a redemption of sorts from the shoddy turn the first book took. There are these flashes of brilliance from Dunmore, and I just keep hoping to see them harnesses and prolonged. This book ain’t that.

While I liked the heroine in this book, at least 70% of the the time, this was a disappointing story for Hattie. The worst, the absolute worst, was her leaving her mine project unfinished. She had too much personal growth up to that point. The walk away made me hate her. And her leaving the man a third time was just…dumb. Their reconciliation was flat.

Also, all the weird subterfuge from the hero’s assistant was just distracting. It added nothing. That whole storyline was weird. Ugh.

I spent the first half of this book thinking I had found a new favorite author. The next 25% was me wishing we could move on from the repetitive loop of indecision from the female lead and questioning why the author suddenly started hating the male lead. Then I kind of trudged through to the ending, which was nicely done, but by then I didn’t care anymore. I liked the four friends tho.

I think Karen Cass is my new favorite narrator. This is only the second book by Sophie Jordan I have tried, but it was as fun as the first. It’s a perfect regency romp. Nothing too deep or poignant, just good, easy listening. Definitely recommend!
