Lady Dunbridge was not about to let a little thing like the death of her husband ruin her social life. She’s come to New York City, ready to take the dazzling world of Gilded Age Manhattan by storm. The social events of the summer have been amusing, but Lady Phil is searching for more excitement - and she finds it, when an early morning visitor arrives begging for her help. Good story, annoying narration
Revisado: 03-15-25
Although the narrator made too frequent weird substitutions of wrong words for, I assume, the words that were written, she wasn’t bad enough for me to completely pan her. And I do enjoy the characters, the settings, and the stories. There is a subplot that is developing, at least through these first two books, so on to Book 3.

The entire production is delightful
Revisado: 02-02-25
I can’t imagine Major Lennox being voiced by anyone other than Sam Dewhurst-Philips. The fact that I am never aware of him also voicing the other characters is the mark of the stellar reader.
Yes, the mysteries in this series are good but the reason I keep coming back is for the fun. I am completely charmed by the utterly romantic main character who doesn’t think of himself as a romantic. Swift is also lovable in his earnestness. In fact all the characters are well drawn. There is much more to say, including about Foggie, but I think I’ll go listen to the first book again.

Historia
A body in the back of a taxi begins an elegantly constructed mystery, perhaps the finest of Marsh’s 1930s novels. The season had begun. Débutantes and chaperones were planning their luncheons, teas, dinners, balls. And the blackmailer was planning his strategies, stalking his next victim. But Chief Detective Inspector Roderick Alleyn knew that something was up. He had already planted his friend, Lord Robert Gospell, at the scene. But someone else got there first....

Alleyn and Fox
Revisado: 08-19-24
If you know Ngaio Marsh, you know her stories are always engaging. I prefer the Franks characterizations. Saxon’s Alleyn sounds more effete than suave, and it was sometimes hard to distinguish between speakers. And the audio on this particular recording was inconsistent. These points were not enough, however, to detract so much from the listening experience that I didn’t enjoy the mystery.

Perfect match of narrator and story

Although I love these mysteries in themselves, I can’t imagine them without Sam Dewhurst-Phillips’ narration. The balanced mix of serious mystery and lighthearted moments (usually in the characters of Lennox and Swift) make for a compellingly delectable listen. And where else does a dog get a speaking part?

Historia
There’s a literary niche for all tastes including those who think that either Agatha Christie wasn’t funny enough or that PG Wodehouse didn’t feature anywhere near as many baffling murders as he could have. The Case of the Canterfell Codicil is a classic, cozy, locked-room mystery written in the style of an homage to PG Wodehouse.

Historia
Doctor Thorne is the third audiobook in Anthony Trollope's series known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire. Long regarded as one of Trollope's greatest works, it is a complex story of love, greed and illegitimacy. Set in fictional Barsetshire, it concerns the romantic challenges facing Doctor Thorne's penniless niece, Mary, and Frank Gresham, the only son of the impoverished squire of Greshambury. Mary falls in love with Frank but he is constrained by the need to marry well to restore the family fortunes.

Historia
While Augusta Hawke is a successful author of eighteen crime novels, since her husband's death, she's been living vicariously through her Jules Maigret-like detective Claude and his assistant Caroline. Then a handsome police detective appears investigating a real-life mystery. Where are her neighbors, the Normans? No one has a clue what's happened—except Augusta. Although she isn't nosy, spending all day staring out the windows for inspiration means she does notice things. Like the Normans arguing. And that they've been missing a week.

This was not up to the standard I’ve come to expect from Mailliet. I’m not sure that I entirely like Augusta. Will I listen to the next in the series? Maybe. I’m addicted to finding out what happens to characters and maybe Augusta will grow on me.

Historia
Barchester Towers is the second of six in the series known as Chronicles of Barsetshire. Narrator Timothy West brings life to the story, begun in The Warden, of Mr. Harding and his daughter Eleanor. It chronicles the struggle for control of the English diocese of Barchester after one Bishop dies and a new one is selected. The rather incompetent new Bishop, Dr. Proudie, led by his formidable wife, and ambitious chaplain, Mr. Slope, begin to create turmoil with their desire to shake up the church establishment.

Brief yet informative overview
Revisado: 06-18-22
The narrator Christopher Oxford was outstanding. Nary a word mispronounced, in English or French, and some entertaining forays into accents (Irish, Welsh and others). Although I thought I knew something about the Celts, I found from listening that many of my ideas had come from Roman propaganda. Another fascinating bit for me was the linking up of Celtic and Indic cultures. I will probably listen to this again at least once.
