In a genre oversaturated with a dim nihilistic perception of supers, “The Spider-Queen” is a return to form of sorts for caped crusaders. Austin McConnell and Elizabeth McIvor have finely crafted a likable and yet unlikely new heroine with the potential of taking over the independent superhero scene. “The Spider-Queen” brings the audience back to the basics of superhero tales: a compelling hero, fun-filled action settings, flare, and most importantly heart. Gone is the depressing self deprecating atmosphere the corporate media believes audiences want to see. Reminiscent of the golden age of comics but with a modern backdrop, this novel is perfect for those yearning for a fresh superhero story that delivers more than just punches in bunches. This is a story that gives hope. Superheroes, at their core, are meant to inspire us to be better people and by that metric it passes with flying colors. “The Spider-Queen” didn’t need a plot larger than its theme. It didn’t need to be an edgy existential drama that leaves the reader depressed after the final page. All it needed was 80 years for the right person to find it, and we are all the better for it.

While there are a few instances in which the liberties taken within this book might contradict the new Disney canon, they are vastly outweighed by the sheer emotional weight and context this novel provides. Anakin’s motives for minor moments in the film are fleshed out to make his fall to the Dark Side infinitely more tragic. Motives are not only clearer, but much more compelling.

I hung on every word written by Matthew Stover, which were expertly brought to life by Jonathan Davis’s performance.

I only wish it were an extra hour longer so as to spend a little more time exploring the inner thoughts of our main characters as they trek into the unknown darkness they knew lay ahead.

All in all an excellent experience that only served to enhance my love for Star Wars, especially within the depiction of Count Dooku’s final moments.

A must read for Star Wars fans.
