Historia
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Historia
Karl von Clausewitz is considered by many to have been one of the greatest writers on war. His study On War was described by the American strategic thinker Bernard Brodie as "not simply the greatest, but the only great book about war". It is hard to disagree. Even though he wrote his only major work at a time when the range of firearms was 50 yards, much of what he had to say remains relevant today. Michael Howard explains Clausewitz's ideas in terms both of his experiences as a professional soldier in the Napoleonic Wars, and of the intellectual background of his time.

Superb Analysis
Revisado: 02-03-24
Excellent analysis by Howard, as expected, given his subject expertise. This must be a mandatory reading for all students of Clausewitz. Discussion on Clausewitz’s intellectual pathway to his early theorization, and on interplay of his thought with later ideologies, is also quite wonderful. As for technical matters, the narrator performs quite strongly. 10/10, in all regards.

Historia
If we were as tiny as ants to another being, what would they make of our philosophies? The great satirist Voltaire imagines alien visitors who have opinions. Bedtime stories are narrated by the world's most celebrated voices and written with no beginning, middle, or end so you don't stay up to hear what happens next. They're interesting enough to give your mind something to focus on, but delivered in a way that encourages sleep.

Historia
Labeled variously a realistic story of whaling, a romance of unusual adventure and eccentric characters, a symbolic allegory, and a drama of heroic conflict, Moby Dick is first and foremost a great story. It has both the humor and poignancy of a simple sea ballad, as well as the depth and universality of a grand odyssey.

All positive aspects aside, the narrator is often too fast and in a strange haste. This particular flaw overall reduces the appeal of the final product.

Mark Twight is a BANFF award-winner, an extreme climber, an extreme writer, and an extreme personality. No matter what he's doing, Mark Twight takes a definite, and often controversial , stand. Anyone who knows climbing knows Twight's name, and anyone who knows Twight's name will want to listen to this audiobook. Each story is told in Twight's taut, in-your-face style. Brand-new epilogues bring each piece full circle, providing updated information and fresh, hindsight perspectives.

The Worst Narration Possible
Revisado: 05-05-20
The storyline is generally overinflated and conceited. Twight had never been an important climber, but he suffers, like most other American climbers, from an accurate form of inferiority complex in exposure to the achievements of European alpinists. It is an underwhelming story, but what makes it truly abhorrent and intolerable is the utterly dreadful, repugnant, and nauseating narration. There are many awful narrators in the world of audiobooks, but this one is the indisputable king of all these agents of horror.

Excellent Content, Terrible Presentation
Revisado: 01-23-20
Newton's 'Builders' is a classic text in the circles of American Freemasonry, especially as a profoundly insightful account of the primordial philosophical origins of the Craft. However, Hummel's insistence to be the narrator has catastrophically reduced the book's appeal. The performance is monotonous, tedious, utterly deprived of passion, and torments one's ears and mind. The book deserves a much better narration, but a proper audio narrator. Content: 9/10. Performance: 0/10.

Historia
Since it was first published more than 25 years ago, Robert Fitzgerald's prizewinning translation of Homer's battle epic has become a classic in its own right: a standard against which all other versions of The Iliad are compared. Fitzgerald's work is accessible, ironic, faithful, written in a swift vernacular blank verse that "makes Homer live as never before" ( Library Journal).

Historia
Much has been written about the Knights Templar in recent years. A leading specialist in the history of this legendary medieval order now writes a full account of the Knights of the Order of the Temple of Solomon, to give them their full title, bringing the latest findings to a general audience. Putting many of the myths finally to rest, Nicholson recounts a new history of these storm troopers of the papacy, founded during the crusades but who got so rich and influential

A demystified methodical Analysis
Revisado: 01-23-20
With the exception of certain leaps in conclusion, Nicholson's analysis of the Poor Knights is a comprehensive, methodical, and methodologically-sound analysis of the origins and socio-economic life of the Order. There are few lapses and meaningless statements (such as "ordinary people are interesting", etc.), and the analysis is strictly non-military (for instance, iconic battles are reduced to statements such as "Saladin destroyed the army of the Kingdom of Jerusalem", or "after the defeat of..."), but the book is really about presenting the Order in a plain and non-mystified manner. The trials are well-presented, although some leaps in conclusion are again present. Overall, a very good introduction.

Extremely awful narration
Revisado: 01-10-20
The narration is perhaps one of the worst performances anywhere conducted to bring vocal life to a book, or as in this case, not only take life away from it but also stamp down on any remaining flame of life with wicked vengeance. The performance itself is adequate to render this great drama of betrayal and vengeance and dismay an utter torment to listen to. Find a better version to listen to, which considering how absolutely catastrophic this is, would be any other version available.
