Never have I had this much fun having a cold! I crawled into bed and downloaded author Glenn Miller 's new novel DOORMAN WANTED. I listened to this smart, witty, wry self discovery tale, full of heart, ode to NYC, nod to PJ Woodhouse, a poke at the swanky upper crust with a group of engaging characters that came alive with terrific narration that had me happily in bed for a couple days, listening for hours, laughing out loud. Love the humanity and smarts of Central Park artists, the pretension of the "in the know" art world, the observant and smart senior residents. The personalities came through the narrator's ( the author!)
voice so pitch perfect, the rich cast is ready for film or stage!

Where does Leaving the Atocha Station rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The author wrote beautifully about that weird place of understanding enough of the language and culture to pass as fluency and then never be quite sure of what you heard, said, or took place. For any of us that have been there , it was beautifully done: did he say this or that? Was it future or past? what did I just say? A story that might be ho hum takes and humor and sadness from this perspective.

Which character – as performed by Ben Lerner – was your favorite?

I loved that the reader was the author, He made it rich with his feelings and confusion. The emotions were so heart felt.

Any additional comments?

I recommend this to anyone who has lived abroad or travelled knowing the languge just enough to get into trouble looking fluent.

It fizzled out like a person who set out to do an marathon and gets to the 23 mile mark and starts walking! I enjoyed the story as it unfolded with great character development and even as it veered off into all the relatives on both sides of the family and seemed like it was going to all pull together, it left me thinking "and so ...?" So glad the Indian woman died or I would have had to kill the reader for his horrific Indian accent. Hype raises expectations. I would have been more satisfied with out the hype.
