Historia
It's been over a decade since Nora left her hometown of Scupper Island, Maine, and very seldom looked back. She's carved out a successful life in Boston, where no one knows her as the awkward girl with the delinquent sister and the dad who left, but a not-as-dramatic-as-it-sounds brush with death has her taking stock of her life. Inspired to reconnect with her prickly mother and snarky teenage niece, Nora returns home for the summer, where she's forced to face the people she's spent the last ten years trying to avoid.

Relatable themes and needed laughs
Revisado: 10-13-24
Xe Sands does a great job as always, reading in a way that seems like she’s having a conversation with you.
The scenarios brought up memories and feelings that I have experienced in similar ways.
Chapter 22 brought the perfect balance with laughter that literally had me crying.
I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

Gratitude for hospice nurses
Revisado: 08-18-24
I came across Hadley’s videos and kept watching them and thinking of my dad. My dad who passed easy a few years ago, had received hospice care at home for a few weeks. Living several states away, I did not have a chance to meet Dad’s nurse, but she was good about calling me with updates and about taking my calls when I had questions. She calmed my dad’s fears, answering the same questions many times to give him reassurance. She was kind enough to do simple things for his comfort that probably wouldn’t have occurred to most people, myself included. I will always appreciate the care, comfort, and dignity that she showed my dad.
Listening to Hadley’s stories, I wept for these families and for Hadley. I imagine it can’t be easy to watch people pass as you get to know them when they are the most vulnerable. I truly believe that there are angels on Earth and you Hadley are certainly one of them. God bless you and your family. Thank you for sharing your heart.

If you would have told a young John Stamos flipping burgers at his dad’s fast-food joint that one day he’d be a household name and that, at the height of his success, he’d be living alone, divorced, with no kids, high on a cocktail of forgetting, he might’ve asked, “You want fries with that?”

More Than Just Uncle Jesse
Revisado: 05-10-24
I remember watching as a teenager when John Stamos began working on General Hospital as Blackie Parrish. Then of course he was great as Uncle Jesse on Full House. However, John shows us that his range is so much broader than many folks would expect. He’s got a great sense of humor and a candid nature that makes this book enjoyable to listen to. I’m glad that he’s got the loving family of his own that he always dreamed of.

Mark Rivers was a firefighter until he got trapped in a wildfire and suffered third-degree burns on his face and body. After a year of recovering, Mark is trying to piece his life back together but struggles both emotionally and psychologically. He's been a recluse until he forces himself to attend his niece's school play and sees Riley, the school's art teacher. Immediately, Mark feels a connection to her. Maybe it's the kind way she greets his niece or the way the art she created for the school play is reminiscent of his late mom's artwork.

Revisado: 11-25-23
Like millions of others, I enjoyed the TV show friends. I didn’t have a favorite character or actor in the series which allowed me to hear this book with no bias for or against Matthew Perry.
I have had people in my life who had addictions and never really understood who or how they made the choices they did. Listening to Matthew tell his story, made me, laugh, cry, feel frustrated, and feel love as I reflected on my own loved ones and their experiences.
If you are a Friends fan, you’re probably going to listen or read this book.
However, if you or someone you care about is an addict now or in recovery, please take the time to hear Matthew tell you his story, it may help you understand more about the ones you love.
God bless you Matthew, rest in peace.

Revisado: 11-10-23
I really enjoyed Maggie Miller’s Gulf Coast series and I’m looking forward to enjoying this series just as much. Some of the content is relatable which makes for interesting listening.
I do wish there was more variety among the readers as some are better at creating different voices than others, but the story is worth it listening to.

I loved this book series!
Revisado: 11-03-23
This is such a heartwarming series and I really enjoyed all the different storylines of each character. I appreciate the author’s ability to weave in faith without it being too much and leading us to see romance without specifying too many details.
I’ll miss reading about these characters, but look forward to reading more of Ms Miller’s books.

I do wish the narration had been better or that there had been more than one person to do the various voices.

In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

Raw, real, and uplifting
Revisado: 10-06-23
I like Viola Davis as an actress, but I knew nothing of her life. I live only about an hour from where she grew up so I could understand some of what she described. However, her life is a true testament to survival. I am her age and also grew up with an alcoholic parent, but never to this extreme. Truthfully, I don’t know how I would have made it through what she did.
My heart broke for her multiple times; for her mom, for her whole family for different reasons.
Nonetheless, there is strength, hope, and perseverance in Viola that I could only wish to have for my own reasons. I have so much respect for this woman and she is truly beautiful inside and out.

There’s an African proverb that says “It takes a village to raise a child”. Hollywood producer and best-selling author DeVon Franklin offers a personal twist: It Takes a Woman. In this riveting and soul-stirring Audible Original, Franklin introduces us to the women who raised him—a “village of love” that selflessly came together to shape him into the man he is today.

Beautiful, testament of love
Revisado: 09-25-23
I wish I could give this book 10 stars. Though I am a middle aged white woman, the lessons, and feelings about love, parenthood, triumphs and trials struck so familiar to me. I wish I’d had a village growing up. I wish I had the strength that these beautiful women did and still do. And I wish I had a partner like DeVon.
This book touched my spirit. I was reminded that my mom did give us her best “peanut butter and jelly sandwich” and I should have recognized it sooner. It also reassured me that where my story is right now, is merely a chapter and not the ending.
My gratitude to DeVon and his beautiful Village for sharing their stories.
