Not the Kristan Hannah I have enjoyed
Revisado: 05-06-25
I have loved Kristan Hannah’s historical novels of strong women’s stories, but this is more like a cheesy beach novel.

Historia
Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

narrator was tedious
Revisado: 03-24-23
I had to return this book so I don't know if the story finally came together. The narrator just read the book in an amateurish manner rather than in the natural rhythm of telling or dramatizing a story.

Rather sappy romance novel
Revisado: 09-29-22
As far as romance novels go, this one is probably a good one. But the plot is terribly contrived, perhaps to set up abundant sexy scenes. The reader didn’t voice different characters so that you knew who was talking. For instance, An old woman’s voice was indistinguishable from her young granddaughter’s. All the females sounded pretty much the same, even though the were from two different countries.

Edoaardo Ballerini makes this book a winner
Revisado: 04-14-15
As usual, Edoardo Ballerini interprets the characters so well, he elevates a fairly good book to a level of excellence.

Couldn't get beyond the first two hours
Revisado: 04-14-15
I should have heeded the negative comments about the narration. The reader does a fine job when using her natural voice and her Spanish accent adds to the atmosphere. But her attempts to speak in a range of other voices, including children and multiple men and women, were so forced they were laughable. Reminded me of myself trying to create funny voices when reading to a child. The story may be good, but I couldn't listen to it.

Now, after a decade of domestic disharmony on a failing farm, she encounters a shocking sight: a silent, forested valley filled with what looks like a lake of fire. Best work since Prodigal Summer
Revisado: 02-02-13
This is the Barbara Kingsolver I love to read - or listen to! I normally avoid books read by the author, but Kingsolver's oral interpretation of her characters makes this book even more endearing. Although her multiple-voice skills are limited, her main character truly speaks the author's voice. I enjoyed her weaving important lessons about global warming into an entrancing story.

Historia
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Incredible narration

This is a clever and very intertaining bit of slightly historical fiction. Edoardo Ballerini's brilliant voice interpretation of the full range of characters is as entertaining as the book.
