Earth failed. In a desperate bid to escape, the spaceship Enkidu and its captain, Heorest Holt, carried its precious human cargo to a potential new paradise. Generations later, this fragile colony has managed to survive, eking out a hardy existence. Yet life is tough, and much technological knowledge has been lost. Then strangers appear. They possess unparalleled knowledge and thrilling technology–and they've arrived from another world to help humanity’s colonies. But not all is as it seems, and the price of the strangers' help may be the colony itself.

Thoughtful take on sapience
Revisado: 02-13-23
I wanted to go on an adventure. ;)
This was a good one, but different than the last two book. I still loved this, although I’d say more because of the interesting ways sentience is explored than previous adventures like detailing the emergence of spider society.
This is an important work, definitely suggest a read. And maybe have a few meditation sessions between some of the later chapters.

This should be required reading in schools
Revisado: 10-14-22
Great pacing and incredibly informative. The beginning is full of interesting insights applicable to both sexes. But subtly inviting to males who may be less interested in hearing about the dangers they pose. Then by the time you’re hooked you’re learning about sexual coercion and it’s many forms and damages.
I hope many women start putting this book as “read this before you match with me” suggestion.
It would also be lovely to see a law in place for dating apps to put together behavioural data for analysis of individuals that show signs of dark triad traits.
It may feel troubling to many to be psychologically evaluated by an AI or data science team. But if people read this book and still feel against the idea; they’re likely exact people to be wary of.
Thanks Dr. Buss and team! The world needs more of this!

Historia
Human beings are primates, and primates are political animals. Our brains, therefore, are designed not just to hunt and gather but also to help us get ahead socially, often via deception and self-deception. But while we may be self-interested schemers, we benefit by pretending otherwise. The less we know about our own ugly motives, the better - and thus, we don't like to talk, or even think, about the extent of our selfishness. This is "the elephant in the brain".

Great factual and logical explanations
Revisado: 08-29-22
Overall the authors did a great job explaining complex topics, the order ideas were presented was well thought out. I particularly like that they tended to almost over-explain the “apologies” and disclaimers for some of the uncomfortable ideas. That’s been useful for me in finding language when talking with friends or acquaintances about other uncomfortable ideas. It’s an important thing to call out and I feel better about my personal life seeing how they’ve done it here.
Overall I’d highly suggest this book, it’s exceptionally useful to introspective individuals. It likely won’t blow your mind with a radical new way of thinking, but will help you efficiently categorise certain behaviours that you notice and make choosing a more optimal reaction a little easier.
Thanks Robin and Kevin!
