Overall, I liked the book...but I got the sense that Craig Alanson just got tired of writing the series and decided to just wrap it all up with a bow. He did leave it open with a bunch of unanswered questions, so hopefully we'll see more (mis)adventures of the newly-expanded Merry Band of Pirates.

I love this series, and overall the storyline for this book was somewhat interesting, but it was incredibly hard to follow. I've heard lots of other books that had sound effects and dramatic music, but at least they narrated the action that way you know what was going on. Most of the action in this audiobook consisted of: muffled unintelligible yelling, sound effects, people grunting and panting, more sound effects, some dramatic music, more yelling and grunting, laser gun sounds, an explosion, then everybody cheering...all the time you're left wondering what the heck you just listened to. It's like trying to watch an action movie with your eyes closed and nobody there to explain what's happening. Again, I love Craig Alanson and RC Bray's previous works, but this was a major miss in my book.

Any additional comments?

So, an entire slave race of genetically enhanced super-soldiers has recently been freed from their evil masters, and what do they do with their new feedom? They hold open tryouts to find new masters.

I've loved all of the previous Undying Mercenaries books, but this one was just plain dumb.

It took me months of listening on and off to finally drudge through this book. I really enjoyed all of the previous books, but this one was like listening to paint dry.

This book reflects a lot of what's going on in today's society, yet the roles are reversed. It's set in a dystopian future in which the "evil religious" zealots have overthrown the government and forced religion into every aspects of people's lives. Instead of having Progressive issues indoctrinated into people's lives as is today...in this future, it's 100% religion, 100% of the time. Instead of people being browbeaten, censored, and lobbied to lose their jobs for not following the liberal narrative, dissenters are sent to government facilities for "re-education". Instead of people communicating using abbreviations, emoji, and other forms of slang, society ahd devolved into speaking some sort of creole language. There is no more liberal media, but instead, every form of media is some form of uber-extreme 700 Club. It's as if the author woke up one morning and wonder what would happen if Westboro Baptist Church somehow overthrew the government. In other words, this book starts out as a Progressive's wet dream.Having said that, after rolling my eyes at the underlying tone, I actually enjoyed this book. Not only is it a great sci-fi story, but it also has great humor with a constant barrage of geeky pop references. There is a great sub-plot of how the main character struggles with the question of his humanity (since he doesn't have an actual body), dealing with his offspring (clones) and their slightly different personalities, and moral issues, such as should he play god (ironic) in order to help a struggling society evolve. So the bottom line is, I would recommend this book to anybody who likes sci-fi...but I would warn anyone who has a religious upbringing to be wary that you'll probably be offended at some point.

Any additional comments?

I've listened to most of the Star Wars audiobooks, and this is the only one that I've been disappointed in. It was overly gory, the plot was really thin, and was a lot like "The Chronicles of Riddick". I think that Darth Maul is a really cool character, but I hate to see him used in such a lame story.
