Historia
Unaware of the wider Heresy and following the Warmaster's increasingly cryptic orders, Roboute Guilliman returns to Ultramar to muster his Legion for war against the orks massing in the Veridian system. Without warning, their supposed allies in the Word Bearers Legion launch a devastating invasion of Calth, scattering the Ultramarines fleet and slaughtering all who stand in their way. This confirms the worst scenario Guilliman can imagine - Lorgar means to settle their bitter rivalry once and for all.

Excellent in every way
Revisado: 06-05-19
The story is a bit difficult to follow at the beginning as multiple characters are introduced, some of whom are killed off almost immediately. But the buildup to the action, which begins very early, and the battle itself are expertly narrated and intriguing. The opening salvos of the Battle of Calth are described in such a grand, sweeping manner it may take your breath away as it did mine.

A forgettable story
Revisado: 02-10-19
Not much happens in this book. The main character isn't interesting and there isn't a discernable antagonist identified until very late in the story. When finally revealed, the antagonist is very disappointing, and because it is so poorly developed, it leads to an ultimately uninspired climax. Readers will learn some notable facts about the Space Wolves legion, however that should be expected already, and could have been explored further. For example, the many fantastical creatures on Fenris and the hunts to kill them could have been discussed more than one or two stories.
The narrator does a decent job but for a legion with such feral tendencies, I expected to hear more animalistic snarls and accents from the Space Wolf characters.
Overall, this book's greatest failing is that it does nothing to advance the plot of the grand Horus Heresy other than give a glimpse of the Space Wolf perspective.

One of the better Horus Heresy audiobooks
Revisado: 01-05-19
A strong vocal performance delivers a twisted tale seen through many interesting viewpoints. Argel Tal is a better main character than most of the series and things he witnesses and endures himself are chilling and wonderous. An excellent read overall.

The best Horus Heresy novel, narrated perfectly
Revisado: 12-07-18
After listening to this audiobook in full for the third time, I still get chills as to how well-done it is. The gradual descent of Fulgrim and his legion from honorable to deplorable is perfectly paced, and remarkably well-illustrated through the eyes of the Astartes as well as a handful of humans; whose skills in the arts begin to reflect the shocking, horrifying realities their so-called protectors become. The infamous Maraviglia chapter, one of the most inspiring segments in all of the WH40K lore, is written with a staggeringly sinister tone that conveys just how far the mighty can fall. All along, the narrator's voice leads you unflinchingly into the depths, and despite the terror and disgust he makes you feel, from the first cries of victory to the final, guttering death of hope, you will beg for more.

Historia
The planet of Caliban exists much as it has for thousands of years - the knightly orders protect the common people, fighting back the beasts that lurk in the depths of the seemingly endless forests. Young Zahariel and Nemiel aspire to join the greatest of the orders, led by the example of mighty Lion El'Jonson and his vision of a peaceful and unified world. But the coming of the Imperium brings new concerns and a new destiny for the Lion as part of the Great Crusade, and the sons of Caliban must decide if they will follow him to glory among the stars.

The weakest of the HH novels and poorly narrated
Revisado: 12-07-18
I've been listening to all the Horus Heresy novels in order, and this one is by far the least compelling. Many of the character names sound similar but the reader makes little effort to distinguish them with different voices. The plot is simply uninspired and the reader's voice acting in general leaves much to be desired. He especially has trouble mimicking shouts or bellowed commands, as well as the voices of young adults and women. I thought listening to the whole thing a second time would be easier, but it was not, and even less enjoyable. You will learn about the origins of the Dark Angels, but will be left scratching your head as to why it is worth hearing.
