Historia
Here is one of the best historical novels ever written. Lame, stammering Claudius, once a major embarrassment to the imperial family and now emperor of Rome, writes an eyewitness account of the reign of the first four Caesars: the noble Augustus and his cunning wife, Livia; the reptilian Tiberius; the monstrous Caligula; and finally old Claudius himself. Filled with poisonings, betrayal, and shocking excesses, I Claudius is history that rivals the most exciting contemporary fiction.

Historia
Technofeudalism says Yanis Varoufakis, is the new power that is reshaping our lives and the world, and is the greatest current threat to the liberal individual, to our efforts to avert climate catastrophe—and to democracy itself. It also lies behind the new geopolitical tensions, especially the New Cold War between the United States and China. Drawing on stories from Greek myth and pop culture, from Homer to Mad Men, Varoufakis explains this revolutionary transformation: how it enslaves our minds, how it rewrites the rules of global power, and, ultimately, what it will take overthrow it.

Feudal Relationships have returned to our economy with a vengeance.
Revisado: 02-15-25
I am not sure that I agree with Varoufakis’ claim that we are now in a new feudal age where organized capital is becoming purely rent seeking through the technological innovations of social media data mining, and information extraction. He is onto something though, and it is disturbing.

Historia
When Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992, he ended twelve years of Republican rule and seemed poised to enact a progressive transformation of the US economy. Yet by the time he left office, the nation's economic and social policies had instead lurched dramatically rightward, exacerbating the inequalities so troubling in our own time. Nelson Lichtenstein and Judith Stein show how the administration's progressive reformers were stymied by a new world of global capitalism that heightened Wall Street influence, undermined domestic manufacturing, and eviscerated the labor movement.

To anyone who wants to understand just how badly served working people were by Bill Clinton’s administration, this is necessary reading.
This is an excellent summary of post-cold war liberalism failed the great body of the American people and effectively redistributed even more wealth upwards than Reagan and Bush did.

Historia
Miranda July’s second novel confirms the brilliance of her unique approach to fiction. With July’s wry voice, perfect comic timing, unabashed curiosity about human intimacy, and palpable delight in pushing boundaries, All Fours tells the story of one woman’s quest for a new kind of freedom. Part absurd entertainment, part tender reinvention of the sexual, romantic, and domestic life of a forty-five-year-old female artist, All Fours transcends expectation while excavating our beliefs about life lived as a woman.

Who knew the beginning of menopause could be so hilarious and so hot!
Revisado: 10-06-24
This is the first novel I have listened to or read by Miranda July. It is simultaneously sexually arousing, existentially tragic, tender, sentimental, and absurdly funny, All the characters are fleshed out beautifully and voices she gives to them in her terrific performance gives them bones, sinews and substance.
I look forward to listening to, and reading her back catalogue. As well as whatever she produces in the future

Historia
It is the 14th century, and one of the most apocalyptic events in human history is set to occur - the coming of the Black Death. History teaches us that a third of Europe's population was destroyed. But what if the plague had killed 99 percent of the population instead? How would the world have changed? This is a look at the history that could have been - a history that stretches across centuries, a history that sees dynasties and nations rise and crumble, a history that spans horrible famine and magnificent innovation.

Brilliant Counterfactual Imaginings
Revisado: 08-11-24
This is a brilliant book with a mad premise: having Europe suffer a mass human extinction during a wave of the Black Death in the fourteenth century spares the world from European imperialism with all its attendant varieties of atrocities but leaves room for Chinese, Indian, Persian, Turkish, and Mongol nightmares to take its place. Saying much more about this would give away and/or misrepresent an extraordinarily beautiful vision of a world that is much different than our own but also shockingly similar. Robinson is brilliant.

Historia
In the Polish city of Lodz, the Brothers Ashkenazi grew up very differently in talent and in temperament. Max, the firstborn, is fiercely intelligent and conniving, determined to succeed financially by any means necessary. Slower-witted Jacob is strong, handsome, and charming but without great purpose in life. While Max is driven by ambition and greed to be more successful than his brother, Jacob is drawn to easy living and decadence.

Wonderful Novel and Outstanding Performance!
Revisado: 07-24-24
I read I.J. Singer’s “The Brothers Ashkenazi” for the first time more than twenty-years ago and was blown away.
Singer’s descriptions indolence and brutality among the wealthy, hypocrisy and madness among the pious, fanaticism bordering on madness among political radicals, brutality and bigotry among the poor and struggling, and filth and opulence in Lodz from the fin de siècle through the years immediately after the Great War and Poland’s Independence are evocative in the extreme.
The characters in this novel are often simultaneously deeply sympathetic and maddeningly vicious at the same time—and it all feels so relatable and real. Few are truly reprehensible even as they are doing reprehensible deeds, and those motivated by faith (either religious or worldly) to live without compromise on behalf of justice neglect and scorn many of those who care the most for them. The viscera of Lodz itself comes to life through Singer’s ability to evoke the sights, smells, sounds and feelings of the city through a period of great upheaval and tremendous suffering.
The brilliance of this book should have earned it a readership as wide as any of the other great novels of twentieth century. That brilliance is accentuated by the outstanding narration of Stefan Rudnicki who brings the characters to life with great skill and facility. I hope this is the first of many audio books by I.J. Singer and Stefan Rudnicki. “The Family Carnovsky,” and “Yoshe Kalb” would be my candidates for the next two works to record.
Cannot recommend this highly enough.

Historia
With the Soviet Union extinct, Saddam Hussein defeated, and U.S. power at its zenith, the early 1990s promised a “kinder, gentler America.” Instead, it was a period of rising anger and domestic turmoil, anticipating the polarization and resurgent extremism we know today. In When the Clock Broke, the acclaimed political writer John Ganz tells the story of America’s late-century discontents.

The America of the 1990s had the same problems we have now, and refused to address them.
Revisado: 07-06-24
The country deserved better than what it got as the Cold War was winding down and ended. What made America a place of hope for working was traded away by our elite for a money making machine that only enriched a few. All the craziness and stupidity we see in our politics is the result of decisions made during the 1980s and early 1990s. Ganz demonstrates and explains this beautifully. Different choices then would have led too much better outcomes now.

In The Management of Savagery, Max Blumenthal excavates the real story behind America's dealings with the world and shows how the extremist forces that now threaten peace across the globe are the inevitable flowering of America's imperial designs. Washington's secret funding of the mujahedin provoked the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. With guns and money, the United States has ever since sustained the extremists, including Osama Bin Laden, who have become its enemies.

Historia
Antonio Gramsci was born in Sardinia in 1891, became the leader of the Italian Communist Party in his early 30s, was arrested by Mussolini’s police in 1927, and remained imprisoned until shortly before his death 10 years later. The posthumous publication of his Prison Notebooks established him as a major thinker whose influence continues to increase. Fiori’s biography enlarges upon the facts of Gramsci’s life through personal accounts, and through Gramsci’s own writings to relatives and friends.

This an excellent introduction to the life and work of one of the most important thinkers of the last century. It gives context to Gramsci’s struggles against fascism and helps clarify the environment where he operated. Great place to start while reading his published works or the prison notebooks.

Historia
When Orwell went to England in the 30's to find out how industrial workers lived, he not only observed but shared in their experiences. He stayed in cramped, dreary lodgings and subsisted on the scant, cheerless diet of the poor. He went down into the coal mines and walked crouching, as the miners did, through a one- to three-mile passage too low to stand up in. He watched the back-breaking, dangerous labor of men whose net pay then averaged $575 a year.
