After traveling this adventure of a Lifetime with Mark Twain, Samuel Clemons, "the most famous man on earth at the time," I feel as though I have actually shared with him at times as an acquaintance with him and with some of the places and situations that deeply effected him.
I am so glad that I disregarded some of the things criticized negatively by reviewers. They were things that could easily have spoiled the experience for me if they had been as distractive to me. 1) The music that gets inserted at times, apparently as punctuation, is not too loud, nor too continuous, nor too repetitive. No background sounds would probably be better, but these are tolerable. 2) The various voices that pop in to discuss some particular aspect, or expertise, are introduced at the time and do not pop in randomly otherwise. 3) Does it feel to me like what I might expect from the Title and Cover image? No. I would have enjoyed that. But the experience was much more than that. It was actually visiting with the man, and some of his food adventures and the parts of America as it was then, the great Mississippi when it ran free and wild and he was the freest man on earth at the helm. And the other places and times so important in his life, the Comet that punctuated each end of his life, the big cities of California coast, and east coast and Florence, Europe, along with the Page Printing Press that seared itself into his life, along with his wonderful house and family that was his dream come true and loss a nightmare. The meaning of his pen name. I am glad that I got a little benefit of the Twain style feast in the actual Twain/Clemons house. Turtle Soup! Who knew? And, of course, I enjoyed the voices and their interplay.
It is a worthy journey.
