good story marred by ads every 5 minutes
Revisado: 12-31-24
good premise. but the producers' decision to interrupt every 5 minutes with a screaming 15 sec ad makes the whole series unlistenable

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Great story, poorly narrated
Revisado: 08-07-24
Dion Graham may be a suitable narrator for some genres, but British naval history is not one of them. He did not understand the subject matter, so could not discriminate where emphasis was, and was not appropriate. To Graham, every paragraph, and in some cases every sentence, needed some breathy urgency. Listening to Graham was like listening to a four year old on a carnival ride - after three minutes of shrieks the listener longs for some quiet.
Although the author's story is compelling, the narration ruined it. Perhaps a suitable British narrator can be found for a re-issue.

NASA is about to launch Apollo 18. While the mission has been billed as a scientific one, flight controller Kazimieras "Kaz" Zemeckis knows there is a darker objective. Intelligence has discovered a secret Soviet space station spying on America, and Apollo 18 may be the only chance to stop it. But as Kaz races to keep the NASA crew one step ahead of their Russian rivals, a deadly accident reveals that not everyone involved is who they were thought to be. With political stakes stretched to the breaking point, the White House and the Kremlin can only watch as their astronauts collide.

Best after Watching Apollo 13
Revisado: 05-10-22
This may be one of the most thrilling Audible books I've enjoyed. The romance is weak and irrelevant, and the voice changes for the characters is terrible. But the story is gripping, and will thrill any 1970's NASA fan. Because of the brilliant technical detail, the listener will do well to watch Apollo 13 a few times to understand the different pieces and systems of the Apollo moon landing systems.

Historia
Melanie Hoskins, an experienced firefighter-paramedic, has been recruited by a very selective and secret organisation known as The Division. Their mission is to protect the populace and secure the continuation of the United States. The Division is only activated at times of dire need. This just so happens to be one of those times. Based in New York City, Hoskins is forced to leave her civilian life and those she loves behind, and join the front line to try to control the 'dollar flu' virus that has been spreading throughout the city.

Not intended for fans of Tom Clancy
Revisado: 04-13-22
This is intended for gamers familiar with The Division video games. It is Not intended for Tom Clancy fans familiar with his tightly woven plots and realistic scenarios. The audio production is quite good, similar to a stage play. But the story is appallingly bad, and could appeal only to gamers willing to accept unreality.
The plot includes a large bank that never learned about offsite data backup and an urban riot that continues for days with only a few federal agents called out to suppress it, presumably while the National Guard stays away. Because there is so little believable in the plot crafting, it is impossible to become interested in the characters. All of which makes this perfect for gamers, and disappointing for ordinary readers / listeners

one of his worst
Revisado: 04-05-22
Way to fomulaic. Bad guys are obvious from the start. Except for two lead characters, all characters who don't die morph into someone else just when needed to create a crisis or perform a rescue. This book was one of the larger wastes of my time in 700+ listens.

Historia
The year is 1970. Emma Gable, a blind teenager coming of age in a small industrial town in Western New York, is about as far from the seismic cultural transformations rocking campuses and city streets across America as a person can get. Emma escapes the chaos of her dysfunctional family by dialing up random numbers on the phone in her bedroom, just to see who'll answer.

Highly entertaining, but with gratuitous politically correct content
Revisado: 09-07-20
I grew up in the era described, and through the Whole Earth Catalog and other sources was introduced to phone phreaking. This book is highly entertaining and true to the period.
The performance is great, with each character getting a believable voice and personality. I listened in a single session and was very satisfied.
The one downside was the writer’s apparent obligation to check the LBGTQ box on the Audible producer’s checklist. There is an interracial gay relationship which plays no role in the story. Unlike the obligatory anti-nuke aspect of the story, which ultimately connects back to the phreaks, the gay story is purely gratuitous. It never connects to the main story.
Fortunately, it does not substantially distract from an otherwise greatly entertaining story.

Not Clancy's best work
Revisado: 10-22-19
As others have said, this is the weakest of the Jack Ryan series. It needed a good editor who could have reduced the length by 25% just by deleting the second, third, and fourth redundancies. Particularly annoying to listen to, as the same thought reappears over and over again.

Historia
Now a number-one international best seller, Billion Dollar Whale is "an epic tale of white-collar crime on a global scale" (Publishers Weekly), revealing how a young social climber from Malaysia pulled off one of the biggest heists in history. In 2009, a chubby, mild-mannered graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business named Jho Low set in motion a fraud of unprecedented gall and magnitude—one that would come to symbolize the next great threat to the global financial system.

Great story. Narrator needs some coaching.
Revisado: 06-02-19
The story is spectacular and well told. The narrator does pretty well with all the foreign names, but makes some classic pronunciation errors that detract from the listening experience. "Jewelry" (jew-el-ry) figures prominently in the narrative, but a few dozen "jew-ler-y" pronunciations will have you gritting your teeth.

Historia
The Theft of a Decade is a contrarian, revelatory analysis of how one generation pulled the rug out from under another and the myriad consequences that has set in store for all of us. The millennial generation was the unfortunate victim of several generations of economic theories that made life harder for them than it was for their grandparents. Then came the crash of 2008, and the boomer generation's reaction to it was brutal: politicians and policymakers made deliberate decisions that favored the interests of the boomer generation over their heirs.
