Historia
At the opening of The Claverings (1866) the beautiful Julia Brabazon jilts her lover Harry Clavering in order to make a marriage of convenience with a wealthy but dissolute earl. Harry licks his wounds, leaves London to train as a civil engineer, and falls in love with his employer's daughter, to whom he soon becomes engaged. But when Julia returns unexpectedly as a wealthy widow, the flame of Harry's old love is rekindled.

Worth reading, but not his best novel
Revisado: 11-16-23
Just not all that compelling of a novel, and very repetitive. Too much time, too many words spent on uninteresting characters. And the characters don’t have the depth of his greater works. Harry is interesting only because he has such deficiencies in his personality, but Hugh and Sophie are unconvincing in their flat-out evil. I think it would have been a great short story.

Historia
Many men have written about Tibet and its secret lore, but few have actually penetrated it to learn its ancient wisdom. Among those few was Madame Alexandra David-Neel, a French orientalist. A practicing Buddhist...she actually lived in Tibet for more than 14 years. Magic and Mystery in Tibet tells the story of her experiences in Tibet, among lamas and magicians. It is neither a travel book nor an autobiography but a study of psychic discovery, a description of the occult and mystical theories and psychic training practices of Tibet.

Couldn’t stick with it
Revisado: 10-02-19
I’m not sure why a male narrator read this book written by a woman, but it was a poor choice. It didn’t help that he sounded like a Mafia hit man. It was like listening to Robert DeNiro read Lao Tze friggin Tu. If you want to get swept away into the fabled Tibetan plateau, I recommend “The Way of the White Clouds”.

Really. Bad. Book.
Revisado: 09-08-19
Wooden characters, badly written, excruciating narrator - this book has it all. I was curious about this writer and gave it a listen, but it's the last novel I'll read by him. The characters aren't developed in an intelligent way; they're simply your basic cast of damaged humans and that's that. There's the odd accident and death, and the author doesn't take the time or ink to delve into the grief of his characters. Really? Hector wasn't just a little sad when his lover died? He just hopped on a plane to Italy and got over it? The dialogue between characters is so painfully written that I almost left the novel several times. If I hadn't paid for the book, I wouldn't have bothered to finish it. It's the first time in my life that I wished I'd ordered a Danielle Steel novel instead.

Historia
A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

Unfinishable
Revisado: 11-25-18
The narrative rambles through several generations without a discernible plot. Dramatic story twists are gratuitous and handled sloppily. The narrator’s voice is annoying, particularly during sex scenes, which are also gratuitous and embarrassing. Spare yourself from reading this and go for a walk instead.

Historia
In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris' recent best-seller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos.

Difficult to follow
Revisado: 08-02-17
I enjoy hearing the author read his own book, but he reads way too fast. I couldn't keep up, as he left few pauses, and the material is dense. I got tired of pausing the book. I'll need to listen several times to absorb it; fortunately, his writing style is so enjoyable that I don't mind spending this much time with his book.

Historia
In 1177 B.C., marauding groups known only as the "Sea Peoples" invaded Egypt. The pharaoh’s army and navy managed to defeat them, but the victory so weakened Egypt that it soon slid into decline, as did most of the surrounding civilizations. After centuries of brilliance, the civilized world of the Bronze Age came to an abrupt and cataclysmic end. Kingdoms fell like dominoes over the course of just a few decades. No more Minoans or Mycenaeans. No more Trojans, Hittites, or Babylonians.

Interesting but tedious
Revisado: 04-30-17
It's a fascinating story and theory for anyone interested in the Bronze Age civilizations and their demise. However, I'd have been happy to read a long article on the subject, rather than get bogged down in the micro-specifics of who traded what with whom and under what ruler. In short, a little TMI, most of which I've already forgotten.
