Historia
It is 1988. On a dead-end street in a run-down suburb there is a music shop that stands small and brightly lit, jam-packed with records of every kind. Like a beacon, the shop attracts the lonely, the sleepless, and the adrift; Frank, the shop's owner, has a way of connecting his customers with just the piece of music they need. Then, one day, into his shop comes a beautiful young woman, Ilse Brauchmann, who asks Frank to teach her about music.

A trip back to my youth in the 1980s, this story reawakened a love of music and a time when I would lay around listening to records for hours.

magnificent
Revisado: 03-17-23
I discovered Okorafor doing a search for authors like Octavia Butler. I tore through this trilogy, on the edge of my seat. The imagery was beautiful, the story was delicately told, taking me through a range of emotions. And the performance was stellar. I will look for her again. Can't wait to get into Okorafor's next series.

Entertaining enough and well written
Revisado: 03-02-23
. I liked this in the way I like a familiar TV drama. The characters were reliable, but not particularly deep. The performance and setting were very authentic to Baltimore.

Historia
In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement.

This one has it all
Revisado: 02-10-23
I got this after reading the 10,000 doors of January. I am so glad, too! The story combines three of my favorite things: fairy tales, reimagined history, and witches. It is quite long, but the chapters are short- perfect for a 20 minute commute. What was really great was the performance: the music, reader, and pace were perfectly meshed. I highly recommend this if you enjoy fantasy with a touch of history.

my 1st Lisa See book
Revisado: 05-27-21
This will be the first of many I plan to read. The audio performance is engaging and beautiful. The story is a well-told journey that leaves me both wanting more and free to imagine the continued story. I was prompted to learn more about Lisa See, the Akha people, and tea. I especially loved the respect for the spiritual beliefs of the Akha. This story and performance provided a much needed departure from the heaviness of the world into hope, joy, and promise.

fun alternative
Revisado: 03-19-21
This was a fun fairy tale. The performances were engaging but not so much I couldn't put it down. The story was the same- just enough nuanxe that I wanted to keep listening but wasn't committed so much if I didn't hear the end. Great for a walk, falling asleep, or some other passive activity.

Hallmark movie made into a book
Revisado: 12-07-20
If you love either the original movie or any Hallmark holiday movie, you will love this. The performance was very good but the story was boring and a little annoying. I listened in 2 sessions but almost did not go back for the second session.

Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

This story has it all
Revisado: 11-16-20
There were several times in the early chapters when I almost gave up. I am so glad I didn't! The story weaves nicely and has a mystical, magical feeling to it while also being grounded in issues touching on racism, classism, loss, and love. I recommend listening at 1.25 speed.

When Elwood Curtis, a black boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, he finds himself trapped in a grotesque chamber of horrors. Revisado: 06-11-20
I chose this book because I wanted to read something that deepened my understanding of what it means to be Black in America. I was not disappointed. The performance was excellent. They story heart wrenching, uplifting, and stomach churning. I am inspired to learn more about the (black) boys who suffered in such places. If you like Before We Were Yours, ypu will like this.
