Historia
In the newest volume of this exhilarating series, Eric Flint continues to reshape American history, imagining how a continent and its people might have taken a different path to its future. With 1824: The Arkansas War, he spins an astounding and provocative saga of heroism, battlefield action, racial conflict, and rebellion as a nation recovering from war is plunged into a dangerous era of secession. Filled with fascinating insights into some of America’s most intriguing historical figures, 1824: The Arkansas War confirms Eric Flint as a true master of alternate history.

imagine Sam Houston, the son-in-law of President Madison worked out a treaty with the Cherokee... they started a confederation. the Cherokee they took in everybody willing to play by their rules which was really how the Cherokee really were. they were never prejudiced against white people or black people. they were prejudiced against crooks! this is the best book about native American history in a small way like "the education of little tree"...

Historia
In this alternate history of the American frontier and the Jacksonian era, a small change takes place in the Battle of the Horseshoe Bend during the War of 1812. What results is a cascade of new developments that becomes an avalanche. In our world, Ensign Sam Houston, just turned 21, led the charge on the creek barricade in that battle and almost died from a terrible wound that took him a year to recover from. In this world, his wound is minor, so he is able to continue fighting the British—and develop his close relationship with Andrew Jackson much sooner.

Eric Flint is an alternative history genius..
Revisado: 11-12-24
this time it's not about somebody getting picked up and moved somewhere. it's about one man and how his recovery from a wound faster than in the real history caused things to change. just one man. Sam Houston... from what I know of history and what I have read, all of the historical characters portrayed in this book could have acted in the way portrayed in this book... The solution to the Cherokee was a hell of a lot better than a trail of tears was... Smart enough politicians could have done it and by all accounts in history. if you could keep Sam Houston sober long enough he could have figured it out right away... This is the setup for the next book "The Arkansas War"...

As close to real Submarine sea stories as you are likely to find!
Revisado: 05-07-24
I personally did a long stent hunting submarines. So I knew the type of things submariners say. The character, John Braddock is so close to many of the men(and women) I feel like I would know the chief if I were to run into him.
As far as I am concerned this is in the top 5 of all the series written about WWII. The actions in these books are totally believable, yes it may sound like BS but I have seen men do the same types of things described in this book.
I served in what they like to call "The Cold War" for 20+years, most of that time I served in the "P3" navy (we hunted subs from the P3 Orion... in case you missed the cold war or were not old enough to know about all the games we played with the USSR,I can tell you not all of it was cold.
Now in case you are wondering if I may be off my nut, I offer you Two books to help you understand why I think so highly of "Crash Dive the first is " Charlie Wilson's war" the story about the biggest secret war the United States has ever fought.
The second is "Blind Man's Bluff" it's all about the secrets of the silent service during the Cold war, both of these books are not-fiction, they are historical accounts of the events.
those are some of the things that give me the basis to say. I really believe this little 6 book series is one of the best series of stories that covers world war II. The closest thing I can compare it to is Webb Griffin's "The corp" a fictional account of WWII told from the USMC perspective?.

The story that led to Fury!
Revisado: 02-02-24
This book is how the house of Murphy came to be. The story of a man who was dragged into looking as if he wants to take over the largest human government yet known. The 500 have let a war drag on for 60 years because war is good for business as long as someone else does the bleeding. This is fiction but the story underneath is as old as human governments... The people for who the present situation is working never want it to change no matter how many others have to suffer...

I love the storyline of The Oregon
Revisado: 10-11-22
I do love the storyline of The Oregon, The story of Juan cabrillo and crew. I've listened to every book published on the storyline. I'm not so sure about this new writer. I'm hoping this is his "first book in this story jitters". This story feels overdone, just a little too much drawn out in the fighting in action scenes. I'm not certain that it works in the storyline, it seems to be kind of twisting the characters.
I suggest that the arthur go back and read the Golden Buddha. That's where it started. Or maybe get some face time with the real or is it unreal (having been around some in a support roll, back in the day & some are Unreal) Special Operators who have actually done some of this stuff and know how things can go sideways, how truth is stranger than fiction and what is just too much to believe and becomes." This is a sea story and it starts with this is no s***".... I have read worse and if I didn't already have an idea of how the characters have acted in past novels. maybe I wouldn't grade this guy so hard...
I Don't bother to review a lot of books because I have this addiction to trying to tell the truth and not be too critical or too praiseworthy and it's a lot to think about when you're recommending to somebody else...
I'm not trying to slam the guy. I'm not saying he did a bad job, just that he's not as good as the original writer. I will listen to his next book but that will determine whether I follow this series anymore or not.

Both victims, a man and a woman, have been scalped with their throats cut. The murders show all the signs of a signature hit, but national and state crime databases reveal no similar profiles. Digging into the victims’ backgrounds, Clayton discovers that six months prior the couple had walked out of a nearby casino with $200,000 of a high-stakes gambler’s money.

This is a good story, poorly told
Revisado: 03-13-22
This is a great series and all of the other books have been well produced with good narration. This book has a great overall story line, but it sounded like it was written by a committee and read like it was a phone menu. I can only say I think that McGarrity was let down by his publishers. This is said to be the climax of the Kevin Kearney series, if so, I only can guess that the author was not able to quality control the production of this novel You will see nothing new about the Kearney family or the isti family in this book and it just doesn't sound like it was finished... Feedback for Mr. Newborn; listen to George Guidall and study his methods. You have the voice for it, but you are so flat it hurts the storyline.

Revisado: 12-13-21
TLDR: great book, real issues, based on true events.
*******
This story is based on a real event, something I had heard about but never gave much credit, a Cowboy Strike in the 1880s, who would believe that? Well I was wrong, I went looking and sure enough, it happened! Elmer Kelton, took that small event as an anchor to tie real history about the political and social changes facing Cowboy's, big Ranchers and small town business people in north Texas after the civil war. No doubt a study of these issues in that time would drive most of us outside to do the worst chores on the list! What Elmer did was weave a story that is gripping and real with so much feeling that it could make you want to load your guns and head out to support one side or the other! He did this by telling the story from the view point of a man caught in the middle, a thinking man who can see both sides of the problem... A place that is not ever comfortable if you can be ruthlessly honest with your self and have a strong sense of honor.
Elmer has told some stores that have a similar feel (The man who rode Midnight) but never one that made me feel so strongly that we are still fighting the same fight in a lot of the USA today, for a lot of the same reasons... Humans are tribal and we stand up for our tribes without trying hard enough to see the other tribes views and we fight, then we all lose in the long run. It's a good book and a great listen, you can listen to it for fun but don't think about it much or you may get sucked into really looking at the problems and the injustice on both sides. They are both right and both wrong!
Pete Bradbury is almost as good as The King of narrators, George Guidall and standing beside The Crown Prince Dick Hill. YMMV.

Nearly 70, Wes Hendricks has led a tough and colorful life as a cowboy and broncobuster, and all he asks now is that he be left alone on his poor, hardscrabble ranch in the West Texas hill country. Not a chance - the powers that be in the little town of Big River (including Wes' old cowboy pal, druggist/Mayor Orville Levitt) have decreed that an artificial lake will be created to generate tourism, and Wes' ranch stands squarely in their way.

A Great Story about family & Truth...
Revisado: 07-12-21
This story starts out a little odd kind of like life's little mysteries and tribulations. an old man with roots to the land, I lost love from long ago, too young people trying to find their way. This story could actually be history, I've seen a lot of this kind of thing in my life and I understand what they are about. I don't often enjoy books that tend to pull on the emotions..This guy did it with truth and I value truth... This is a just and believable picture of what life is like in small towns, They have all these characters in them If you were raised in a small town, squint a little and look to the side, you'll see yourself or somebody you know. The thing is that If you weren't unlucky enough to be born and raised in a small town... listen to the book anyway and maybe you'll understand some of the things that are causing our country to have so much trouble it's because 1/2 doesn't understand the other and we don't take the time to learn or try to see what's real. Westerns aren't one of my favorite genres but I have found that this Man does write good ones, I think this book could be used as a good social studies text. Best Western ranch book I have ever read or heard about.
PS: I didn't buy this book, my partner did. I am glad that it happened that way or I would have missed the chance to hear it.

Marine biologist and former government agent Doc Ford is sure he's beyond the point of being surprised by his longtime pal Tomlinson's madcap tales of his misspent youth. Thanks to genealogy websites, Tomlinson's now-grown offspring have tracked him down, seeking answers about their roots...but Doc quickly grows suspicious that one of them might be planning something far more nefarious.

Revisado: 02-19-20
Ok, I admit I like most all the Doc Ford books... Over the years some of the story lines were really out there... This book was several things, the most important to me was it was believable and everyone is acting like the people who we have grown to know in Doc Ford's world. I am glad that Randy decided he had another book in the world of Doc Ford...

When the CIA realizes the identities of three American spies in Brazil have been compromised, they turn to Juan Cabrillo and the crew of the Oregon to rescue the agents. What seems a routine operation turns out to be a trap designed by Juan Cabrillo's greatest enemy, a man driven by hate to seek the ultimate revenge. At the heart of the plot is a state-of-the-art ship that is identical to the Oregon: same weaponry, same technology, same ability to evade capture. The only thing it doesn't have is Cabrillo and his talented crew.
