Entranced in a Mystical World...
Revisado: 07-15-20
This piece has so many wonderful little quirks that really fortifies this unique world the listener steps into. I listen typically at standard speed to achieve the appropriate pacing for myself, and I feel it works rather well for The Lost Machine! The narrator is quite clear and engaging.
I feel like there was a bit of a slow start to Moss' journey with the first few chapters, but the rhythm quickly settles in afterwards. The narrative achieves balance with the way Kirk spaces out the high-intensity action scenes between the world building and more lull moments. In addition, Iridis, Buttons, and the Sisters all have really interesting personalities with behaviors that make them feel very lived-in to this reality presented to us. As this story searches for truth and closure, you can't help but be on your toes for all the twists and turns till the end. Worth checking out!

Booklist called them "two of the unlikeliest but most likable amateur detectives in crime fiction." The Chicago Tribune describes them as "colorful... lunatic... like a twister.". They're Hap Collins and Leonard Pine, and if you've been reading Joe R. Lansdale's Hap & Leonard novels like Mucho Mojo, The Two-Bear Mambo, and Rumble Tumble, then this is the treat you've been waiting for.

I Need More!
Revisado: 07-15-20
This piece gave me one taste into this hearty world, and I'm hooked! Leonard and Veil lead an explosive start to the narrative that act as a nice foil to the speaker. We're lead on a journey in administering justice, and all throughout the court arc, you can't help but root for Veil to win the case. His tangential and near-chaotic defense leaves you wondering if all the effort is worth it, keeping you on your toes and laughing along the way.
Does he succeed? I'll leave that to you to find out. Highly recommend!

Historia
The acclaimed and ground breaking collection of short stories, poetry, and allegory by Andrew Vachss, one of the most powerful voices in the field of child protection. This work is an illumination of the realities of child abuse, juvenile violence...and tribute to the power of imagination. People Magazine says, "Another Chance is Dr. Seuss dressed up as a Scorsese movie, another on-target hit by an author who has made children his primary concern."

The Child Advocacy Book We Need
Revisado: 07-14-20
After navigating through the aphorism-filled chapters towards the beginning, the reader is whisked through a multitude of child-related narratives that likely happen somewhere around the world everyday. Some stories warm your heart, others ache it. Not unlike a flower, as a child's honesty, soul, and innocence comes naturally to them, adults can just as easily take that away.
Another Chance prompts us to realize that we possess a sense of responsibility and self-efficacy in understanding that we are the paint to the child's blank canvas. We can raise them to reach their true potential or fulfill their dreams, giving them the chances that we as adults may have not had. Definitely an engaging listen with important lessons and implications. Worth checking out even if you don't/won't have children of your own!

Historia
The audiobook edition of a rare story David Morrell wrote to give to his friends at Christmas is finally available. Featuring a foreword by the author, this is a novella that has different meanings, depending if you're a child or an adult. It's about the poignant friendship between Father Christmas, who lives a hundred years before being replaced, and Father Time, who lives only a single year before being replaced. Each year, Santa sees a version of his friend grow old and die.

Great 'By The Fire' Story
Revisado: 07-01-20
Admittedly I wasn't expecting for the introduction to be long, but I think it adds a nice context going into the narrative. Morrell conjures a charming little story world full of lessons and sweet interactions between Father Time and Santa. Their vulnerability, respect, and trust is very heartwarming to hear, such as when they kiss one another's cheeks when bidding Father Time farewell the first time. I also love the sunset imagery. In that particular moment, the visualization of turning crimson to pink to an ominous dark color adds a nice touch of symbolism.
It's a nice listen for kids to show them the importance of responsibility and benevolence, while conversely showcasing the repercussions of an increasingly nihilistic and selfish modernity. Yet, it's also nice for adults as well to resurface a sense of hope and optimism in an increasingly tough world. Would recommend highly!
