The narrator doesn’t know how to speak

The book was amazing with an AMAZING message. However, it was at time, messy because the person whose voice we heard doesn’t know how to pronounce words correctly or how to accent them at the right syllables. Someone should have caught this. For example, I have been here for 10 minutes. She pronounced it I have bean here for 10 minutes. It was off-putting. And it happened with 30 or more words. Wish I had bought the book and not the audiobook.

The book ended well… But it was hard to connect with the protagonist and a bunch of other characters that you didn’t care for. It was really hard to understand what was happening at the outset as well… Just generally did not enjoy.

Wonderful story about the life of a man who left Libya for college and then couldn’t go back for 30+ years because of Muammar Gaddafi and his regime. You get to know Khaled so well and you really like him in his fears and imperfections. He could be anyone.

Rollercoaster of Feelings and Knowledge

Wow. I am walking away from this book so sad. Sad for the painful Native American history. Sad for the re-writing of said history so the white folks come out smelling good. The intersection of all of these lives and the trauma they experienced piled up with their generational trauma is hard to process. Had to read this book before embarking on Wandering Stars which made it to the 2024 Booker Long List. Enjoy!
