And I thought his only claim to fame was having a small acting roll in The Godfather. Wow was I wrong. Playing Carlo Rizzi was just a tiny part of Gianni Russo’s amazing life. Some of his stories are so incredible, you can’t help but wonder if some of it is embellished. But even if only 10% of his life’s tales are true, he has led the most fascinating life I have ever read. From being stricken with polio and quarantined in the polio ward in Bellevue Hospital for years as a child (and still managing to kill a pedophile orderly who tried to rape him) to being a close associate to crime boss Frank Costello at 16, to being involved with money laundering in the Vatican, to having lunch with Pablo Escobar, to being close friends with Marlon Brando, to personally feuding with John Gotti, his exploits could only be described as legendary. You will hang on every word he speaks in this audiobook. His life story is entertaining, death defying (literally), emotional, and even inspiring, all at the same time. And he tells it with such sincerity that you can’t stop listening to his saga. Among the world of autobiographies, his is one of the best I have listened to (and I have listened to dozens of them). Get the book, take the cannolis. Completely recommend!

The Encyclopedia of Gilligan’s Island! Only Wish it Was Longer!

I loved Gilligan’s Island as a child. And I still watch it is an adult. An intelligently written, upbeat, and entertaining show and this terrific book by The Professor is the happily the same. Russell Johnson gives you a peek into the behind the scenes stories, cast biographies, studio set challenges, and relationships that you always wondered about and presents them in the most informative and entertaining way. Though you feel bad for him at some points as his career was somewhat stunted by the typecasting he was forced to endure, he never lets it dampen his fondness for the positive impact that The Professor had on so many of his fans. The book moves along briskly and is never boring for a minute. My one and only disappointment is that I wish it was longer. I would have loved to learn more about the three hour tour that lasted generations!

The Best Organized Crime Book You Will Ever Read, Period.

I commute 2 hours every day to work so I listen to a lot of audiobooks. I have always been fascinated by organized crime and was always very interest in it’s history. I have listened to many audiobooks on the subject, including some of the most famous such as The Godfather (yawn…the film was much better) and Wiseguy (Scorsese’s Goodfellas was the living embodiment of the fantastic book). But Five Families is something a little different. It covers the birth of Cosa Nostra (the La was inappropriately added by the FBI) over 100 years ago to it’s pinnacle in the 1970s. Everyone from the founders of the Colombo, Lucchese, Bonanno, Genovese, and Gambino families to their modern day bosses are all presented and analyzed. In it’s over 20 hour narration (and you’ll never get bored), you get a true education in the history, inner workings, and hierarchical structure of organized crime. It is a must read (or listen).

An Incredible Journey…But A Little Preachy

Arnold has had an incredible life. The book is over 20 hours long but you never get tired of hearing is story. His journey from very very humble beginnings in Austria, to his successes in competitive body building, to his lucrative real estate development (yeah, you read that right), to his film accomplishments, marrying into the American Royal Family, and then all the way to the Governor’s Mansion is a success story like no other. He was a multimillionaire real estate mogul before he ever set foot into Hollywood. And he brought the sport of bodybuilding into the mainstream. His story is undoubtedly inspiring and makes you feel like you can accomplish anything if you work hard enough (you can almost hear the Rocky theme song playing in your head). Although, you may come away from the read with a feeling that he maintains a bit of a superior attitude that Americans are lazy and misguided and if a poor refugee from Austria can build an empire from nothing, all Americans should be doing it. The condescending undertones aside, it is overall a real feel good book that has you cheering “Ahnald” on the whole time.

This book shares a lot of interesting stories of Alex Debogorski’s life. Tough childhood, wild 20’s and 30’s, freewheeling antics, and good ole boy fun times. Overall it’s entertaining. But if you are looking for lots of Ice Road Truckers stories, behind the scenes events, and Alex’s views on the other drivers and the series production, you unfortunately won’t find much of that here (only about the last hour of the book). If you want to learn more about ice road trucking or the Ice Road Truckers TV series, like I did, you’ll probably need to look elsewhere.

I have always been a die hard Burt Reynolds fan. Though the critics blasted him for not being Spencer Tracy or Marlon Brando, he makes it clear in this fantastic autobiography that that was never his intention to begin with. He didn’t need his films to necessarily “have a message”. He just wanted to entertain people. And that he did, exceptionally well. This well written, enormously interesting, and complete chronology of his life is one of the best autobiographies I have ever read. From fascinating stories of his childhood, to his stuntman days, to his rise to and decline from megastardom, to the endless list of superstars that he palled around with, he bares his heart and soul with his story and sincere narration. He was not the egotist that many labeled him as. He was just a good ole respectful southern boy who wanted to make people happy. You’ll enjoy every minute of this read. Rest In Peace, Mr. Reynolds. Thanks for the entertainment!

I have always been a big Steve Martin fan. From his improv days of stand up to flexing his acting muscles in some hilarious films. Maybe I was expecting too much from this book. While the story was mildly interesting, his monotone narration grew weary. Disappointingly, the story only covered his stand up days and the timeline appeared to stop right at the time he started his cinematic achievements (he only briefly glances over The Jerk and Roxanne). I still think he is an incredibly talented performer, but this book was a bit boring.
