Historia
From the end of the Middle Ages to the First World War, Europe was dominated by one family: the Habsburgs. Their unprecedented rule is the focus of Simon Winder's vivid third book, Danubia. This is a narrative that, while erudite and well researched, prefers to be discursive and anecdotal. In his survey of the centuries of often incompetent Habsburg rule which have continued to shape the fate of Central Europe, Winder does not shy away from the horrors, railing against the effects of nationalism, recounting the violence that was often part of life.

All setting and atmosphere, hard to follow story
Revisado: 04-01-25
Like a novel, where the setting and atmosphere are emphasized, at the expense of plot.

Historia
Central Europe's ancient civilizations have long been dominated by empires: The Roman Empire; the Habsburg Empire, based in Austria; and more recently, the Soviet Communists. But the decline of communism in the late twentieth century has unleashed old resentments, rivalries, and ambitions that have caused yet more war in this troubled region.

Germany is historically one of the most important of all nations. Since emerging from its days as a Roman province, Germany (including Prussia) has had a central role in European affairs. It has reached the heights in art, music, literature, and political power, yet it's also reached the depths in humiliating military defeat and partition. This presentation reviews the broad sweep of German history.

Historia
This Very Short Introduction offers a clear, accessible, and concise account of the apocryphal gospels - exploring their origins, their discovery, and discussing how the various texts have been interpreted both within and outside the Church. Looking at texts ranging from the gospels from Nag Hammadi to the Dialogues with the Risen Savior, Paul Foster shows how the apocryphal gospels reflect the diversity that existed within early Christianity.

The Study of the Apocryphal Gospels
Revisado: 01-07-14
Might be better titled 'The Study of the Apocryphal Gospels a Very Short Introduction' as much of the content details how these 'Gospels' were found, how they are being analyzed, and why they are important. Also includes extensive references, which would be good, if in a paper copy of the book and you were doing research. But the references are distracting when listening to the book. This book is probably better in paper form.

Dry lectures
Revisado: 12-04-12
More a series of short lectures than a book. The performance is fairly dry. Most of the time is spent telling the legends with only a little bit of analysis of the legends.

Good story, OK reader
Revisado: 09-13-11
Anytime the reader changes for a series of audible books, it's going to be jarring. And Glover is not as good as Marsters. However he is not bad. If he had been the reader from the start, he might not have had a lot of praise, but I doubt there'd be that many complaints.
I don't feel I need to say more about the story than: if you're a Dresden fan, you'll enjoy it.
